Announcing the Clementine Quilt Along!

Hey everyone!  We are just past the halfway point with our Patchwork Quilt Along, but 2018 will be here in the blink of an eye, and we will be ready to start our next quilt along!  We have it all ready to show you, and we hope you love it just as much as we do.  We are calling it the 2018 Clementine Quilt Along, benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, whom we love supporting.  Their mission is to save children by making their research and findings available to everyone AND by treating children at no cost to the families, so they can focus on the one thing that matters – helping their children get better.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital logoWe are also partnering with Moda Fabrics once again, who has generously worked with us since we started doing these quilt alongs to benefit our community.

Together, Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will match up to $20,000 of your donations in 2018 to our St. Jude fundraiser.

The donation page will be ready soon, and we will update this post once it’s ready.

Now… onto the super fun part… here is the beautiful quilt for the 2018 Clementine Quilt Along!

Make beautiful things with La Conner by Jera Brandvig

Hello, and happy Saturday!  We have some breathtaking projects to share with you today, courtesy of Jera Brandvig, aka Quilting in the Rain.  She was our gracious filming guest back in June, and now we are thrilled to have all her videos featuring her gorgeous new line called La Conner done so we can share them with you all!  Over those few days, we just fell more and more in love with Jera.  She is brilliant, and you’ll have to agree with us after this post!

La Conner by Jera Brandvig for Lecien Fabrics
La Conner by Jera Brandvig for Lecien Fabrics

All her projects were made with her brand new fabric line for Lecien called La Conner, and it is the most beautiful, elegant fabric we have seen this year.  Inspired by summer trips to this idyllic town in Washington, she has packed it with little berries and flowers on classic geometrics, like checks and ginghams.  She formed the color palette so you can use it every season and holiday, plus the touch of gold metallic adds a beautiful finishing sheen to anything you make with it.  There is even LACE and thread to go with it!  Check out our La Conner video to see it all, before we move on to her projects!

The Quilt-As-You-Go Strip Quilt Block… with LACE!

Jera’s fabrics are just the start of our love affair with her creativity.  She is also the author of two Quilt-As-You-Go books, Quilt-As-You-Go Made Modern and Quilt-As-You-Go Made Vintage (releasing this September!).  As a busy mom of two kiddos, she fell in love with quilting and developed her own methods of quilt-as-you-go out of sheer necessity, to be able to do a little bit of sewing each day.  That led to her publishing her first book Quilt-As-You-Go Made Modern, and in this next video she shares a strip quilt block from that book, with an added twist of charm with her new LACE!  (Yes, I’m capitalizing all the LACE in this post, but it’s unique and deserves all the special recognition, so sorry not sorry!)

The La Conner Patchwork Tote Bag

Jera also designed for us a charming patchwork tote bag with a cute pieced pocket.  Bags are far from our specialty, but after watching her make this one, we all were inspired to go home and make our own!  She taught us how to use new notions like strapping for the handles, and you can make it with a pieced or single fabric rectangle for the body of the bag (options, options!).  And of course, if you feel the need, you can always embellish it with her wonderful LACE!  It’s a great first bag project for anyone to try.  (We were very tempted to keep the bag, but alas it is now home with Jera!)

Pieced or not pieced, this tote bag is sew charming!

The La Conner Pocketed Placemat

Continuing onto more pretty projects to adorn our homes, she designed a pocketed placemat using a quilt block from her upcoming Quilt-As-You-Go Made Vintage book and sweet, easy LACE edging (indulge me… I’m almost done!)  If you’re like me, adding pockets to any project just takes it up a notch.  How cute is that silverware tucked inside?  Imagine customizing a placemat for each member of the family, it’s like an invitation to the table every time you use them!

Cute and functional, this placemat will make you want to eat pinky up!

How to Bind with LACE!

Finally, she showed us the most amazing way to finish a quilt… and the answer is, of course, LACE!!!  The La Conner lace has a special feature that makes this a super easy way to enhance the ‘ooh aah’ element of your quilt.  Watch the video to find out what it is, and try not to drool all over that pretty LACE, which is available in single color 11-yard spools and multicolor 1-yard packs.  Plus, not having to prepare binding strips?  Yes, please!  And of course, having matching thread colors is another level of La Conner perfection!  So brilliant, that Jera.

We are so grateful and happy that Jera spent these few days with us, blowing our minds with all of her creative methods, hacks, tips and ideas!  Be sure to save all of these videos for your future projects (#quiltgoals) and let us know what you think (especially about that luxurious LACE).  Have a wonderful weekend!

NEW BOOK: Cake Mix Quilt Book Volume One

If you ask us what our favorite new goodies for 2017 are, there’s no question that it is the Cake Mix Recipe Pads from Moda Fabrics!  We’ve hosted a fun Bake-Off, we have released videos with Carrie Nelson on how to use each Recipe Pad, we came out with Cake Mix pads for our exclusive FQS Jolly Bars, but there is still more Cake Mix goodness baking up in our kitchen!  Today we’re giving you a whiff of the yummy quilts in It’s Sew Emma’s upcoming Cake Mix Quilt Book: Volume One!  There are now eight different Cake Mix pads, and The Cake Mix Quilt Book has two designs for each.  That’s a total of 16 tasty quilts to try!

All you will need for each quilt is two Moda Layer Cakes (one print and one solid), a Cake Mix Recipe Pad, and fabric for your sashing, borders and binding.  Using Cake Mix pads keeps your piecing fast and accurate, so these will go much faster than you think, and all 16 quilts boast a ton of WOW factor.  And these quilts range in size from Lap to Queen, so you have plenty of size options as well!

Here is a quick look at some of the blocks you will be making in this book…

2017 Patchwork Quilt Along: Block 8 – Rolling Nine Patch

It’s already time for Block #8 – Rolling Nine Patch in our Patchwork Quilt Along!  Hopefully you are all caught up with the first seven blocks.  If you are just now joining us, welcome!  Our quilt is made in Bonnie & Camille Basics in the Patchwork Quilt Along Quilt Kit.

Most importantly, we are benefiting Make-A-Wish with this year’s quilt along.  We are asking for a small donation each month in exchange for the monthly patterns, and Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will each match up to $10,000 of donations raised.  We have reached our goal, well before the end of the year, thanks to our generous community of quilters, so all the matches will be maxed out!  Woohoo!!  Please do continue donating – every dollar makes a difference!

In Stitches with Fat Quarter Shop: First Love Pillow

In Stitches with Fat Quarter Shop

Welcome back to our next pillow in the In Stitches series!  This one is First Love pillow, and you bet you will fall head over heels for the simple piecing technique we’ve come up with to easily create this beautiful diamond pattern.

first love pillow

Fabric Requirements & Tools

For the pillow, you will need these fabric requirements.

  • Two 1/8 yards of light print fabric for pillow front
  • Two 1/4 yards of dark print fabric for pillow front
  • 1/4 yard fabric for binding
  • 3/4 yard fabric for backing
  • 20” square of batting
  • 20” square of muslin
  • Coordinating thread of your choice to piece and quilt (we used Aurifil Blush 50wt)
  • One pillow form (we prefer the 18″ square for extra fullness)

We selected our four prints from the Yes, Please collection from Riley Blake Fabrics for the striking combo of black, white and rose gold metallic!  It’s our favorite color lately.

step 1

Cutting Instructions:

For cutting, we subcut our strips into lots of triangles, and the Creative Grids Half-Square 4-in-1 Triangle Ruler ruler came in very handy, though you can certainly use a small square ruler as well.

step 2

From each light print fabric cut:
1 – 3 1/2” x WOF strip, subcut into 9 triangles (18 total)

step 3

step 4

From each dark print fabric cut:
2 – 3 1/2” x WOF strips, subcut into 12 triangles (24 total)

step 5

step 6

From the binding fabric cut:
2 – 2 1/2” x WOF strips

From the backing fabric cut:
2 – 20” x 24” rectangles

Assembly Instructions:

With right sides facing, place a light print triangle on a coordinating dark print triangle. Offset a 1/4” on the two joining corners, as shown, and press open.

step 7

Repeat with the same fabrics, continuing to offset a 1/4″ on the two joining corners and pressing open.

step 8

Assemble four matching dark print triangles and three matching light print triangles. Make three Row One Units.

step 9

Repeat the steps above with four matching dark print triangles and three matching light print triangles. Make three Row Two Units.

step 10

Assemble one Row One Unit and one Row Two Unit as shown, paying close attention to the row placement.  Press open and make three Complete Row Units.

step 11

step 12
Our sewing machine settings for piecing on the Bernina 770 QE

step 13

sep 14

Assemble the Complete Row Units paying close attention to row placement. Press open.  It should look like this!

step 15

Square up the Pillow Top to 17 1/2″ square, trimming the excess fabric.

step 16

Quilt, Trim, Bind and Dazzle!

Layer the pillow top, batting and muslin, and quilt as desired. To let the rose gold shine, we quilted it minimally with straight lines. We selected a matching thread color and used our #37 patchwork foot as a guide along our seams.  Simple as that!  Trim the excess batting and muslin.

step 17

step 18
Our sewing machine settings for quilting the pillow top on the Bernina 770 QE

step 19

step 20

Fold the Fabric F rectangles in half along the 24″ side with wrong sides together for the Pillow Backing. Folded in half, they should measure 12″ x 20″.  Layer the two folded Fabric F rectangles with a 4” overlap with folds in the center and raw edges on the outside.

step 21

Place the Pillow Top right side up on the Pillow Backing, matching centers. Pin and baste 1/8” away from the edge. Trim excess Pillow Backing.

step 22

Piece the Fabric E strips end to end for binding. Bind as desired.

step 23

Et voila!  Your First Love pillow is done and ready to dazzle!

pillow close up

We hope you LOVE this pillow as much as we loved making it, and please comment with more ideas on what other tutorials you’d like to see us do!  If you make the First Love pillow, please share it with us, we are looking forward to seeing your unique versions.  Thanks for stopping by!

Howdy! Drawstring Bag by Stacy Iest Hsu

Quilts will always be our favorite thing to make, but this adorable drawstring bag designed by Stacy Iest Hsu might sway us just a little.  We are a sucker for cute things, and this little guy certainly is that.  It is great for keeping your WIPs together when you’re traveling, and makes a pretty re-useable gift bag!  Stuff it with some of Stacy’s cowboy panel buddies  and a few baby items for an unforgettable baby shower gift.

Check out all of these fun drawstring bags that our quilty staff made!  Because it is a basic bag, everyone has put their own spin on it as well, changing up the lining, pockets, and even the size to make a matching wine tote!  This is a basic recipe – choose fabrics that mix or pop, add buttons for accent, embroider initials on the pocket – put your own twist on it and have fun!

What you’ll need:

2 – 4” x 15” rectangles (lining)

2 – 3” x 15” rectangles (top)

2 – 1 ½” x 15” rectangles (drawstring channel)

2 – 7” x 15” rectangles (body)

2 – 5” x 15” rectangles (bottom)

1 – 5” x 5 ½” rectangle (optional front pocket)

44” piece of 1” bias tape, folded in half and topstitched down.  Use your preferred method or see how Stacy does it here:

Once you’ve got that all cut and ready to go, press play and sew along with Stacy!
