The 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt

3-Hour Baby Gingham QuiltHappy Friday, quilters!  A while back, we got a request from one of our YouTube subscribers for an easy gingham quilt.  Yes, gingham quilts are made up of rows of straight squares, but could we make it even easier?  We took on the challenge and did it!  Today, we are presenting the 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt.  Three hours is long enough for you to make this quilt from first cut to finished quilt top.  Intrigued?  Grab the free 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt pattern and press play below to see how we did it!

We used the Essentially Yours basics line from Moda Fabrics to create our 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt.  This collection of mini dots, checks and strips has an awesome array of light and dark values that mix so well.  The most important part of this quilt is choosing the right tones to make it monochromatic, like a true gingham fabric, so in the free pattern, we have listed six color combos from Essentially Yours to make red, blue, yellow, lime, aqua and gray versions.

There is nothing that feels as fresh as a simple gingham quilt!

This quilt is so quick to whip up as a baby shower gift, but I have a hankering to use it for picnics this season!  We hope you enjoy this sweet, simple beauty (and especially how fast it comes together).  And of course, share them with us on social media!  Comment and let us know what you think, and if you have any other ideas for our next video project!

Happy Cloud Batting

Happy Cloud Blog Header

How many times have you been told (or told someone) “it’s what’s inside that counts”?  When it comes to quilts, you just can’t have a quilt without batting, and we are thrilled to announce that Fat Quarter Shop now has that covered for you!  Our brand new EXCLUSIVE line of batting is Happy Cloud, and that’s exactly what it feels like!  Treat your quilt sandwiches right, without breaking the bank, with Happy Cloud batting.

Happy to introduce Happy Cloud batting, in 5 types!
Happy to introduce Happy Cloud batting, in 5 types!

Introducing Happy Cloud Batting!

The first thing you might notice is that each Happy Cloud package has a different color.  This cute color code denotes our different types of batting material.  We have five types of batting, including: 80/20 Silky Blend; Cotton Simply Natural; 50/50 Cotton Blend; Wool Warm & Plush and 50/50 Bamboo Blend.  That was a huge mouthful, so let’s break them down!

Happy Cloud Batting Types

80/20 Silky Blend Header

The 80/20 Silky Blend is 80% Natural Cotton and 20% Superior Polyester.  This is one of my favorite batting types because it’s super soft and very comfortable.

It comes in these seven size options: a 12-pack of 14″ squares, Craft, Crib, Twin, Throw, Queen and King.  The 14″ squares are great for practicing longarm quilting on your sewing machine, but most of all we love them for mini quilts!

14" squares are great for mini quilts

The Wool Warm & Plush is 100% Premium Wool and comes in these six size options: Craft, Crib, Twin, Throw, Queen and King.

Like the name suggests, warmth is the main feature of this wool batting.  One thing to note is that wool is a natural material, and it will come with some of the natural inconsistencies and coloring you can expect from a natural fiber.

The 50/50 Bamboo Blend is a sweet combination of 50% Select Bamboo and 50% Natural Cotton.  Bamboo is a very breathable, lightweight fiber and a great choice for summertime quilts and throws.

This type of batting is available in these six size options: Craft, Crib, Twin, Throw, Queen and King.

50/50 Cotton Blend is of 50% Natural Cotton and 50% Superior Polyester.  This batting is very quilter-friendly because it’s strong and can withstand a lot of handling, yet soft to the touch.

It is also available in these six size options: Craft, Crib, Twin, Throw, Queen and King.

Cotton Simply Natural is 100% Natural Cotton batting.  This is a terrific choice for bed quilts, and once washed it will shrink slightly to give your quilt a vintage-worn look and feel.  If you love the crinkly texture of a washed quilt, this is for you!

This type is offered in these six size options: Craft, Crib, Twin, Throw, Queen and King.

Be one of the first to try out Happy Cloud!  We can’t wait to see your happy little quilt sandwiches!  Share your Happy Cloud projects with us online with #HAPPYCLOUDBATTING.  Head over to Fat Quarter Shop to choose the Happy Cloud Batting that floats your boat.  What type do you prefer, and why?

It’s already time for Block #7 – Propeller in our Patchwork Quilt Along!  Hopefully you are all caught up with the first five blocks.  If you are just now joining us, welcome!  Our quilt is made in Bonnie & Camille Basics in the Patchwork Quilt Along Quilt Kit.

Most importantly, we are benefiting Make-A-Wish with this year’s quilt along.  We are asking for a small donation each month in exchange for the monthly patterns, and Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will each match up to $10,000 of donations raised.  We have reached our goal, well before the end of the year, thanks to our generous community of quilters, so all the matches will be maxed out!  Woohoo!!  Please do continue donating – every dollar makes a difference!

AGF Stitched: Symphony Quilt

Symphony: AGF Stitched
We’ve released a brand new episode of AGF Stitched, and it really strikes a chord while hitting all the right notes!  It’s named Symphony, and our Symphony Quilt Kit features the earthy harmony of Maureen Cracknell’s Soulful collection for Art Gallery Fabrics.  I love the bold mixture of plums, grays, creams and coral, and that pop of turquoise!
Kimberly with Symphony block
Kimberly and the big Symphony quilt block

We love “plus sign” quilts, but this design is more like “plus x 2”.  The secondary cross blocks give it an extra layer of interest.  We also love how BIG these blocks become.  Once you start sewing your rows together, it’s a fast and quick finish!  The Symphony quilt finishes at 72.5″ square!

A “soulful” quilt addition to our AGF Stitched series, Symphony!

As always, we have invited some bloggy friends to sew along!  They all chose different Art Gallery collections, and we always love seeing how diverse a single quilt can become!  Peep their versions of Symphony and share the love with them.

Classic & Vintage: Wild Goose Chase

Classic & Vintage: Wild Goose ChaseIt’s Friday, and we’re going to send you off on a Wild Goose Chase… but you’ll wind up with a beautiful quilt!  The next Classic & Vintage block in our YouTube series is the Wild Goose Chase quilt block.  This vintage block is one of our absolute favorites, but those flying geese units can be tricky to line up for even blocks.  Our main tip here is to use the flying geese paper by Triangles on a Roll — it’s so easy to use, and all the units wind up sewn in perfect rows that you don’t need to worry about!  PLUS, we have all Triangles on a Roll notions on sale 15% this week only with promo code Triangle15, so there is no better time to snatch one up to try for yourself!

We made our version one-of-a-kind with Snowberry and DENIM, both by Moda!  The blend of the two was amazing and gave it a elegant, worn look that we love, plus it has a universal appeal for everyone!  Our version of the Wild Goose Chase quilt is kitted up with those fabrics and a flying geese paper roll, so check it out.  You’ll love how smoothly the denim sews up!

Of course, we had wonderful bloggy friends join us to show you more avenues for the Wild Goose Chase design!  Hop on over and let them know your thoughts.

We can’t wait to see what you make, so be sure to use #wildgoosechasequilt so we can share your finished beauties.
