New Patterns from It’s Sew Emma

We are almost to the end of the week, but we haven’t run out of quilt mojo yet! It’s Sew Emma has released four new patterns into the wild, and we can’t wait for you to scoop them up. They are: Meadering Meadow, Family Reunion, Candlelight, and High Rise.

Our patterns are as different as can be, but we always try to include various size options whenever we can. On top of that, we’ll show you other looks for these patterns to help you see all the possibilities.  And don’t forget, they are all also available as downloadable PDFs, if you need some instant printable gratification!

So now, let’s dive right into these…

New Quilt Patterns from It’s Sew Emma

Meadering Meadow quilt
Shake up your blocks into an explosion of color and angles

Meandering Meadow makes me think of a party quilt!  I know that’s not a real thing, but it feels like these blocks are tumbling and flinging color about.  Our sample is made in Savannah by Gingiber, but it works just as well in the refined prints of Caroline by Brenda Riddle.  Meandering Meadow is Fat Eighth and Fat Quarter-friendly, depending on what size you make!

Family Reunion quilt
Family Reunion ties together a multicolor palette with strong Irish chain blocks

Family Reunion jumps out with bright stars and fine nine-patch Irish-chain blocks.  Combined with The Good Life by Bonnie & Camille, this quilt feels youthful and vibrant.  But switch it up with the gold and blue hues from Blue Sky from Laundry Basket Quilts, and you have a regal quilt that could easily pass for a vintage treasure!

Candlelight quilt
Go soft or turn up the volume on Candlelight

Classic star blocks never grow old, and the patchwork effect of the backgrounds is a fun element to play with.  Candlelight can lend a restful ambience to your home in Poetry by 3 Sisters, or turn up the brightness with Thrive by Natalia & Kathleen in a modern setting.

High Rise quilt
Stack Jelly Roll strips for maximum impact

High Rise was inspired by the green and black palette of Authentic Etc. by Sweetwater.  Mock log-cabin blocks are formed by stacking Jelly Roll strips, and by matching up color values, you create slashes of color.  But throw in a few rainbow brights, and it works equally well, like with the Bee Basics and Bee Backgrounds from Lori Holt.

I hope you enjoyed this special look at our newest It’s Sew Emma patterns!  Will one of these end up in your pile of go-to patterns?  Let us know!

Jolly Bar Cake Mix

Hi everyone! The end of June has snuck up on us, thus we are at the end of #jollybarjune! That means it is time to dig into the last bite of news from the Jolly Bar world, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  Not too long ago, we indulged in a really fun Cake Mix Bake Off, in which we and several quilty bloggers went head to head with original quilts we created with Moda’s fabulous Cake Mix Recipe Pads.  We really love those recipe pads, so… why not make them for Jolly Bars?  Introducing our exclusive Jolly Bar Cake Mix Recipe Pads!

We love our new Jolly Bar Cake Mix Recipe Pads!

Jolly Bar Cake Mix Recipe Pads – half the size of a Layer Cake, but just as fun!

They have everything you love about the Layer Cake-sized Cake Mixes in a convenient 5″ x 10″ size to use with Fat Quarter Shop’s Jolly Bars!  Basic instructions, block ideas, and 44 sheets of triangle paper will get you well on your way to an original quilt.  Of course, our new Bella Solid Jolly Bars make perfect backgrounds to pair with any of our other Jolly Bars!

Each recipe card from the Jolly Bar Cake Mix pad will yield two 3″ finished half square triangles and eight 1.5″ finished half square triangles, and you can combine those units to make a 6″ finished block.

Weekend Quilting Book Showcase by Jemima Flendt

Weekend Quilting by Jemima Flendt book showcase

Happy Monday!  Today we are thrilled to be a part of Jemima Flendt’s showcase of her very first book, Weekend Quilting!

Weekend Quilting by Jemima Flendt
Weekend Quilting by Jemima Flendt

This is the book you need to entice your non-quilting buddies to the dark side, er, to start sewing.  Jemima of Tied with a Ribbon has packed this gem of a book with 16 small projects that won’t take much time or fabric, but can get those creative juices flowing all the same.  It’s a way to “Quilt and Unwind”, and we think that’s a perfect subtitle!  In 10 chapters, she covers all sorts of techniques, from basic quiltmaking and simple piecing all the way to applique and foundation paper piecing!  For all the technique chapters, Jemima has provided 2 projects for practice.

Everyone in the Weekend Quilting Showcase has tackled one of these 16 projects, and our It’s Sew Emma writer Nova took on the Avenues Mini Quilt from the Foundation Paper Piecing chapter.  She modified it to make a tablerunner, and we love how wintry it becomes in sophisticated blues.  Her mini came out beautifully due to Jemima’s excellent instructions and guidance.  We applaud those perfect points!

We are one of the last stops in the Weekend Quilting showcase, which means there are so many yummy posts to peruse!  All these projects are so enticing – have a blast clicking through, and it will surely brighten up your Monday!

Classic & Vintage Series: Snail Trail Quilt Block

Classic & Vintage: Snail TrailHappy Friday, Quilters!  We are ending this wonderful week with another episode of our Classic & Vintage block series on YouTube, the Snail Trail quilt block.  This block has various names, including Monkey Wrench, Ocean Waves, Whirligig, and even Indiana Puzzle, but Snail Trail is the most prevalent name we found.  In any case, the swirling effect of this block can be a doozy.

Snail Trail Quilt BlockThere are many different ways to make this block, especially with paper piecing and templates, but we like simplifying things wherever possible while still keeping accuracy and perfect points.  We tested several different methods and sizes to make this block and wound up with a technique that we are really happy with!  Curious to see how we do it?

Check out the free Snail Trail block pattern here, then hit play!

Now that you’ve got a hang of our technique, are you ready to make a full quilt?  We have this gorgeous Snail Trail quilt kit made with Snowman Gatherings III!  Or simply purchase the Snail Trail PDF pattern and select your own fabrics.

Solid Jolly Bars: White Bella Solids Jolly Bar

We are continuing #JollyBarJune with our third post about our Bella Solid Jolly Bars!  As a quick recap, we are showing you all three of our first set of Bella Solid Jolly Bars, which are colors White (9900-98), Bleached White (9900-97) and Porcelain (9900-182).  Today’s hue is the brightest white of the Bella bunch, the White Bella Solids Jolly Bar, color 9900-98.

The first ever set of Bella Solid Jolly Bars in White, Bleached PFD and Porcelain

After Bella Bleached White 9900-97, White 9900-98 is our main go-to shade of Bella Solids.  We like to pair this crisp, paper white with bright collections and modern collections with lots of contrast, like Rainy Day, Red Dot Green Dash, Manderley, Merry Merry, Voyage and True Blue, and it is just as universally complementary as 9900-97.

White 9900-98 Bella Solid Jolly Bar

We included a free pattern called Do the Twist with this solid Jolly Bar, and it is my favorite of the bunch.  We used a True Blue Jolly Bar and White Bella Solids Jolly Bar, and these braided blocks are so simple!  It finishes at 52.5″ square, and can easily be a quilt for a cool boy-man or a couch quilt for a sophisticated living room.

That’s it for this Solid Jolly Bar installment, but of course there is still more to come!  Check back next Wednesday – we can’t wait to show you what we’ve done with these Solid Jolly Bars, and you will be totally addicted, “bar” none.  Any guesses as to what we’ll be talking about next time?  Until then, Happy Quilting!

I Love House Blocks Book

Hi, Quilters!  It’s Wednesday, but we’ve got a first look at some very inviting quilts to get you through Hump Day.  Inviting as in “come on over to my house!” because they are all from the new I Love House Blocks compilation book from That Patchwork Place!  Several amazing designers, including our own Kimberly Jolly and Sarah Price, have put together 14 quilts with unique takes on the beloved house block.  We DO love house blocks, and looking at all these bright abodes makes us love them even more!

Here is Kimberly and Sarah’s collaboration, called Welcome Home!  Cute windows peek out from subtle four-patches, and that multicolor stripe is adorable, like the house eaves.

But we can’t just toot our own horns here; all 14 of these quilts are wonderful and different.  The negative space in Village on a Hill is soothing, like living in the country with acres and acres of Mother Nature as your neighbor.

On the other end of the color spectrum, Tiny Town is a scrappy interpretation of neatly fitting row houses, where everyone knows everyone, and that’s a good thing!

Sugar Shack feels like pop art to us, and we love the color reversals for each block.
