Join us for the Petit Four Quilt Along

We know you love paper pad piecing as much as we do, so we designed a quilt along that is all about the blocks you can make with our favorite It’s Sew Emma Foundation Paper Pads! The Petit Four Quilt Along features six of our foundation paper blocks throughout the pattern to create something unique that will inspire you to get sewing. We’ve got all the details for you today for this FREE quilt layout!

We are sewing the 4″ Petit Four Quilt blocks each month from October 2023 through April 2024. This unique foundation-paper pieced mini quilt measures 32.5″ square, and the pattern includes a pieced backing.

One exciting feature of this quilt along is that there are already tutorials on piecing all of these blocks, and you can find them in the Foundation Paper Piecing Tutorial Playlist on Fat Quarter Shop’s YouTube Channel! Kimberly guides you through everything you need to know, and you can follow along with her in the videos as you work each month.

Quilt Along Supplies

There’s been a popular request for the fabric requirements of the alternative block and quilt sizes you can make for this quilt, so we’re adding them here! If you’re sewing an alternative size, comment below and let us know which one you’ve chosen.

Kimberly is sewing with Blueberry Delight by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda Fabrics. Working with this collection will be a sweet treat thanks to its traditional designs featuring flowering florals and foliage in beautiful blues! She is using two Blueberry Delight Layer Cakes for her blocks, Blueberry Delight Cream Blueberry Fields Florals backing, Blueberry Delight Berry Dots Blueberry for her binding, and Eyelet Snow White by Fig Tree Quilts for her background.

  1. This is perfect for me. I’ve been looking for a mini quilt for a spot on my sewing room wall. I’ve gotten the papers kit, so I’m all set.

  2. This quilt is sew sweet! Two layer cakes plus background seems like a lot for a 32” square quilt.

    1. Hi Sharyn!

She’s only using the blues, she needs about 74 for that, so if she can get 2 blocks from each layer cake square she’d need about 2 layer cakes! That’s why! You’re number of layer cakes will just depends on if you’re using all the squares or not. Hope this helps!

  3. How would this work with fat quarters? I see to have several bundles that I need to use up. (Although I would LOVE to do it exactly as Kimberly is doing, blue is my jam!)

  4. I am not seeing the Sparkle Stars blocks on the quilt. Are they on the back, or am I missing them in the layout?

    1. Hi Nancy!

Great guess, yes they are on the back as part of the pieced backing. If you want to just do the quilt top you could skip those blocks and have an extra week for catching up on the others or finishing!

  5. I’m not on Instagram, just email and U-Tube. Are you going to offer piecing and finishing instructions on either of the above 2 that I listed? If not, I can not participate in this project.
I have several sizes of the pp pads and use them when ever I can. I would have to purchase the “Courthouse Steps” and the “Snail Trail” pads.
    Please reply. Thanks

    1. Hi Jean!

For purchasing you’ll have to go to our shop to order: https://www.fatquartershop.com/

As for the rest, the information is all here on the blog and everything is already available for download here: https://www.fatquartershop.com/4-inch-petit-four-quilt-along-fabric-requirements-and-quilt-layout-quilt-free-pdf-pattern?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=qal-petit-four

The only thing that will be on social media is Kimberly showing her updates, but you don’t have to let that stop you from sewing along! We’d love to have you participate.

      1. I’m not on instagram either. Will we be able to view the block tutorials on the you tube channel or do we need to join her channel to do so?

        1. Hi Laurie, there won’t be tutorials for this quilt along. Kimberly will share photos of her finished blocks on Instagram and in YouTube Livestreams, but she won’t be showing how to make the blocks.

          Hope this clears things up!

  6. I love this quilt! I have left over 6 inches foundation papers and would love to make it. Is it possible for someone to calculate what the fabric requirements are?

    1. Hi Yoriko!

There’s really no good way to calculate it, but this is what we would do.
2 Layer Cakes is already a good amount of extra for the 4” blocks, and should be a good starting point for 6” blocks, but an additional Layer Cake could be useful.
Depending on how many prints in the Layer Cake you want to use. Kimberly’s only using the blues in hers, so half of each Layer Cake meaning she needs more.
For the background and yardage, would round up 25%.

  7. I think the fabric requirements are not correct and missing the binding fabric. It says the binding and backing are Blueberry Delight Cream, but that can’t be right as the picture shows a binding that is a darker blue color with lighter dots which is a fabric in the picture not identified in the post. Please clarify. Thanks!

  8. Regarding the prior post I made, the binding is Blueberry Delight Berry dots Blueberry. The Blueberry Delight Cream is actually Blueberry Delight Berry Dots Cream, I think, but we will still need yardage requirements for each. Thanks and so looking forward to sewing this quilt!

    1. Hi Jeanne!

Upon further checking, you’re right! Kimberly is sewing with the same binding as shown above. I thought she was using the same fabric as her backing, and it has been corrected! Thank you for bringing this up so we were able to check-in. I have updated the information above. I just wanted to apologize for all the confusion on my end, and thank you!

      Happy quilting!

  9. Wish this was on pre-quilt so we could change up colors to see what it would look like. I LOVE the blue, but was thinking about using my stash.

    1. Hi Donna, we don’t have this in pre-quilt, but today we added some images of the quilt in several collections. Take a look and see if you get some inspiration for your quilt!

  10. I will not be using the layer cakes as I have abundant YARDAGE in blues. I looked at one of the YouTube instructions, but it didn’t tell how to cut the strips. Do the paper foundation pads instruct on how to cut the strips? Thanks in advance…..

    1. Hi Arden!

Yes, our Foundation Pads have cutting directions in them! This is a great question. I hope you have fun sewing along and using all your blue yardage! 🙂

    1. Hi Susan!

Many of the blocks will work with Jelly Roll strips, like the Pineapple pads. But some of the pads will need bigger pieces than 2.5” wide, like Sparkle Star and Snail Trail.

  11. I’ve decided to up-size mine to the 6” blocks, and will be using Flower Farm fabrics. Looking forward to starting!

  12. I am really torn between the 4″ or 6″ blocks. I’ve already bought all the stuff for the 4″ one. It’s such a beautiful quilt!

  13. Snowed in today and probably two more days on vacation in Big Sky, Montana. Working on my 6” blocks and watching a resident fox make an occasional appearance. Heaven! Thanks for this wonderful sew-along!❄️❤️❄️

  14. What would be a good fabric to use instead of the white on white background. I love white on white!
