We’re bursting with joy to announce this new quilt along! The Vintage Sunburst Quilt Block has us shining with happiness, and with the Vintage Sunburst Quilt Along, you can savor that happiness throughout the year! Join us as we sew this paper-pieced quilt designed by Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet Co. in 2024.

Bask in the warmth of some quilty sunshine and stitch a tapestry of radiant beams! The Vintage Sunburst Quilt measures 64.5″ x 88.5″ and is designed using Foundation Paper Pads. All the supplies are listed on the Vintage Sunburst Quilt Along Supplies Page and below.

This quilt along is an excellent introduction to paper piecing for confident beginners, and our How To Sew the Vintage Quilt Block video tutorial will show you how! There will not be tutorials throughout the quilt along, but you can refer to that video tutorial anytime as you’re sewing along.

The Vintage Sunburst Quilt is designed with the Mercantile Collection by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs. Kimberly is sewing with the Mercantile Collection and the Mercantile Bee Backgrounds by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs. (Mercantile will arrive this month.)

  1. I’m a little confused on the background… The quilt will take 12 yards of background fabric? I know that paper piecing has waste, but that just seems excessive for the total size of quilt. Can you please explain? Thank you!

    1. I’m confused as well. It says three of the one yard bundles which contains four different fabrics. So that’s 12 yards. That’s a lot of fabric.

    2. Hi Joanna (and Cyndi and Debbie) 🙂

Yes, 12 yards of background (4 different backgrounds). You can purchase 3 of the Bee Backgrounds Mercantile One Yard Bundles or 3 yards each of the four background SKUs listed on the pattern to make it just like ours.
Because all of the blocks use paper pads, the quilt uses more fabric than a traditionally pieced quilt because all of the pieces are cut larger and then trimmed with the paper. Plus at Fat Quarter Shop, we always make sure there is enough fabric for miscuts and starching.

Hope this helps clear things up! Let me know if y’all have any other questions!

  2. I believe its either 3 yards of one color or a 3yard bundle with 1 yard of 3 different colors.

  3. I said I would never do paper piecing and yet I purchased two pads of the 12″ block earlier this year because the block is so flippin’ pretty!! So I am happy for the sew along to go with the earlier video that was posted! I will be changing it up though and only making 12 blocks and using a wildly different fabric collection if I can get enough fabric together so we shall see how it goes but excited to try!!

  4. I think this will be sew fun! I am going with Grunge background and American Gatherings II Reds and Blues for a patriotic quilt! Super excited to get this one going!

  5. If the pattern calls for 12 yards of background why does the background bundle the @fatquartershop sells by Lori Holt only have 4 one yard cuts? I used that bundle as my guide to figure out how much background to buy since the pattern was little confusing on that point. I’m super excited to see everyone’s creativity! Can’t wait to get started.

  6. Will Kimberly be going over the cutting instructions on YouTube? If not, is there a diagram at all? I appreciate the info! Thank you!
