DIY Mother’s Day Gifts

Give your mom or mother figure the perfect gift that says “I love you,” with something handmade. Mother’s Day is coming up in May, so we’ve scoured the internet and gathered up some of our favorite projects you can sew. Most of these them have free blog or video tutorials provided by the designers, and that’s always appreciated! There are DIY Mother’s Day gifts for moms who sew, handmade gifts for moms who garden and gifts to sew for those who – like most of us – like to have a smartphone or tablet close at hand.

Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday in May in most countries and on the fourth Sunday in May in UK and Ireland. If you start now, there’s still plenty of time to make one of these special Mother’s Day gifts.

For the mom who sews, here are some cute ways to get organized:

Roll Up Sewing Machine Mat

A sewing machine mat keeps tools and notions right at hand. This nifty free project by Riley Blake designer Melissa Mortenson also rolls up to safely stash tools or take them to a sewing retreat.

Twice as Nice Zipper Bag

A zipper bag with a clear pocket is doubly good. These are quick to make and perfect for storing sewing or knitting tools. The Twice as Nice PDF Pattern and ByAnnie vinyl are available in our shop.

WIP Project Bag

Are you looking for a large project bag that’s perfect for keeping cross stitch and embroidery? Watch our free tutorial for making the WIP Project Bag.

Nana’s Needle Book

A needlebook is one of THE BEST ways to store needles and keep them from getting lost! The felt pages of the book can be used to categorize various needle types and sizes. Art Gallery Fabrics designer Amy Sinibaldi has a free tutorial for Nana’s Needle Book over on her blog.

Spring is here, and the garden is calling! Here are some ideas for the gardener in your life:

Patchwork Pillows for the Garden

You can make a set of cheerful garden seat pillows with some fabric pieces, polyester stuffing and ribbon. Follow this video tutorial from Ellis and Higgs designer Nadra Ridgeway for all the details.

Summer Blooms Garden Apron

A garden apron keeps a pair of pruning sheers at the ready, along with pockets for seed packets, twine or harvesting herbs. This DIY Summer Blooms Garden Apron only uses 2/3 of a yard of heavy-weight fabric. The free tutorial on Garden Therapy will tell you what you need to know.

Laptop Love Laptop Sleeve

Lella Boutique’s free tutorial shows how to make a padded laptop sleeve. Vanessa gives instructions for customizing the padded pocket for e-book readers, tablets and laptops of any size.

Gadget Cushion

This cute Gadget Cushion by Quiltsmart is the cutest phone rest we’ve seen this year! It’s made from a fat quarter of fabric. We have a free step-by-step tutorial for this quick and easy sewing project.

There is no shortage of ideas when it comes to making handmade gifts! Leave a comment below telling us what you plan to make.
