BLOG REMIX – La Conner Tote

We’re shaking things up on the Jolly Jabber! We are bringing life back to our old projects with Blog Remixes! Every other Thursday until November 15, we will be throwing it back to one of our tutorials with new fabrics, notions, tips and tricks to inspire you to make your next project. Whether you’ve seen this project before or it’s your first time, there’s a remix project for everyone. This week’s remix is the La Conner Tote! Jera Brandvig made this adorable bag using her La Conner collection while videoing with us last year. This bag can be customized to any taste and great for any use!

Project Requirements

Here’s what you’ll need to make this project:

  • 1 – Soft and Stable Project Pack
  • 62 – 4” squares cut from Charm Packs
  • 2 – 1” x 30” Strapping pieces
  • 2 – 4” x 30” Rectangles to cover straps
  • 2 – 14” x 19” Patchwork panels
  • 1 – 6” x 8” Scrappy Pocket
  • 1 – 6” x 8” Pocket Lining

And that’s it! Follow along with the video tutorial where Jera walks you through making the tote step by step!

Quilt Along

We even had some awesome quilty friends make their version of the La Conner Tote:

Quilty Staffer Deborah made her La Conner Tote using Materialize Eclectic Elements by Tim Holtz for Free Spirit Fabrics. She said using ByAnnie Soft and Stable is perfect for making bags!

Deborah made her second La Conner Tote using Paper Cuts by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Cotton + Steel Fabrics.

Quilty Staffer Susan made her La Conner Tote using Dear Mum by Robin Pickens for Moda Fabrics. She said “I used a charm pack and forgot to cut the squares down to 4″, so I ended up with a large tote, measuring approximately 6″ x 18″ at the bottom and 24″ across the top. I also used 1 1/2″ strapping for the handle instead of 1″, since it was a large bag. Loved making this bag!

Quilty Staffer Terri made her La Conner Tote using Dot Dot Boo! by Me & My Sister Designs for Moda Fabrics. She has been quilting since 1987 and this is her first tote bag. Love the soft and stable!

Kendra of Good Starter (@good_starter) made her La Conner Tote using Arroyo by Erin Dollar for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. She added a strip of bias binding to the handles to bring the colour of the body though.

Kristina of Center Street Quilts (@centerstreetquilts) made her La Conner Tote using Wonderland by Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton + Steel Fabrics. She said “The La Conner tote is the perfect project to use large scale prints or novelty fabric that you don’t want to cut up! Turns out Wonderland was a perfect choice for the La Conner Tote and I love being able to see the full scale of the print all together in one place!”

Quilty Staffer Nova made her La Conner Tote using Front Yard by Sarah Watts for Cotton + Steel Fabrics. She says “I used the project pack size of Soft and Stable so my bag is a little smaller. Even though the original uses squares for the outside, I had fun sewing strips together to make my bag.”

Quilty Staffer Codi made her La Conner Tote using Panda Love by Kelly Panacci for Riley Blake Designs.  She says “My daughter absolutely loves all things Panda, when I saw this fabric collection, I knew I’d use it to whip up this fun and easy La Conner tote back for going back to school!”

Quilty Staffer Bev made her La Conner Tote using Biscuits & Gravy by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics. She loved using the Soft & Stable because it gives the bag more body.

Bev made her second La Conner Tote using Little Sweethearts by Laundry Basket Quilts for Andover Fabrics.

Quilty Staffer Nancy made her La Conner Tote using Bungalow by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics.

Kim of Lily Patch Quilts (@lilypatchquilts) using Rooftop Garden by Moda Fabrics. She made her bag using 5” charm squares!

Joanne of Quilts by Joanne (@turtlequilterjo) made her La Conner Tote using South Sea Imports by Jordan Fabrics. She dipped into her vintage turtle fabric collection to make her tote!
