Once you’ve poured countless hours into sewing a quilt, it only makes sense to give it a finishing touch with a quilt label. We often receive questions about what quilt labels we use or how we make them ourselves. We’ve gathered some of our favorite quilt label ideas, and we’re sharing them on the blog today.
Why add a quilt label? It’s a way to honor the artistry and effort you put into your creation. If your quilt is like many quilts, it may go to live with someone you love or it could go to a quilt show or be passed down through the generations. Wouldn’t it be nice to have your name on it so people know who made it?
There’s no one way to make a quilt label. It’s up to you! You can buy pre-made quilt labels, order personalized labels, use printable fabric, or write your own with thread or permanent marker. Check out this blog post on signature quilts for tips for writing on fabric.
You can attach a quilt label at any time in the quilt-making process! You can sew a quilt label into the backing of a quilt as you’re piecing it together, add a quilt label before you complete the binding, or attach one after the binding is done. It’s all up to personal preference.
In the photo above, the quilt label was attached to the back after quilting, but before binding. You can see this method in the videos below.

I always hand embroider my labels and sew them into the binding on the bottom left hand side back of the quilt and then I use a blanket stitch for the remaining 2 sides of my label
Thank You !
The labels add such a nice touch to the quilts and these are great ideas. Could you tell me what fabric is in the top picture? I love it.
Hi Bambi! Thank you!
The fabric around the label in the top image is Cloud Cherry Turnover from Cook Book by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs.

I love the “Hugs and Stitches…made with love” quilt label. Do you mind sharing where it came from?
I adore all the new ideas you’ve shared. Thank you!!
Lianne, if I’m not mistaken, that label looks like it’s from Sweetwater.
Hi Lianne!
Sherry is totally right it’s a Sweetwater Label! Kimberly’s labels are usually from Sweetwater!
I always add a personalized label from Sweetwater on the back of my quilts. I make an extra block and piece it into the back for extra personality.
