The Ultimate Beginner Quilt – Batting and Basting

Today we’re making sandwiches – quilt sandwiches, that is! We’re putting our quilts together and walking you through the final steps of making The Ultimate Beginner Quilt.

In today’s tutorials, special guest Gina Tell of Thread Graffiti will show you exactly how to put the layers of your quilt together and temporarily secure them together (also called basting) to get them ready for quilting on your home machine. This quilt sandwich is an important step in finishing your quilt.

If reading this in email, click this link to watch the video.

You will only need to baste your quilt if you plan to quilt it on your home machine. If you plan to send your quilt to a longarm quilter, you should not baste it.

Basting Supplies

For beginners, we recommend choosing a batting that’s approximately 8-10″ taller and wider than the finished size of your quilt. If you prefer not to use spray adhesive, basting pins or needle and thread work also.

Masking Tape or Painter’s Tape
505 Spray and Fix Temporary Fabric Adhesive
Curved basting pins (Curved safety pins are easier to close, but you can also use regular safety pins.)
