We’re celebrating our quilting community with a free block of the week quilt along called the Sewcialites Quilt Along. We’ve joined forces with 18 talented designers to bring you a free 38-week quilt along with amazing sampler blocks and sew many options! If you’re just joining us, you can find all of the details over on the Sewcialites Landing Page. We’re sewing up block #16 this week!
This week’s designer is Carrie Nelson! Carrie is a talented quilter, pattern designer, and author. Carrie designed Friendship and enjoyed stitching her blocks using lots of leftover scraps! Carrie also improvised the corner half-triangle squares. She couldn’t help herself! Those are two triangles cut from squares measuring 3.5″, and cut twice on the diagonal. Piece them on the short side, add the background triangle and trim to measure a 2.5″ square. Don’t worry if you are a beginner, Kimberly can help you sew this block today’s video tutorial on YouTube.

Carrie sewed two 6″ blocks using scraps from her stash. She used scraps from her Jen Kingwell Lollies stash, and the background is one of Zen Chic’s Modern Backgrounds Paper. Visit Carrie on Instagram (@justcarrieintexas) for more details about her block!

Kimberly is sewing with the Homestead collection by April Rosenthal for Moda Fabrics. She made her blocks in all three sizes for a fun challenge.
We invited some FQS staffers to join
The suggested fabric requirements and all the block patterns released so far will be posted on the Sewcialites Landing Page so be sure to bookmark it for later reference.

I love the #16 Friendship Quilt block but would like to be able to make a 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 ” unfinished block. How would I figure out the dimensions to enlarge the block from 9 1/2 x 9 1/2″ unfinished block to the larger size I listed above. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
You would need your blocks to finish at 4”. So, your unfinished units would be 4 1/2”. Your flying geese would finish at 2”x 4” or unfinished 2 1/2” x 4 1/2”.
I hope this helps.
Deb, thank you for providing the measurements on this one. You are very generous!
