Pat Sloan's Holiday Book Tour - The Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog

Pat Sloan’s Holiday Book Tour

We were thrilled to receive an invite from Pat Sloan to join her Holiday Celebrations Book Tour! Pat Sloan’s Holiday Celebrations Quilt Book is chock-full of holiday inspiration for all the memorable moments throughout the year. Pat has included 17 patchwork and fusible appliqué projects for Valentine’s Day, Easter, the Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

In celebration of the book release, Pat has planned some fun book giveaways and we have one here for you, too! Read on to find out more!

Quilty staffer Kate chose to make the Sparklers Quilt, and she’s here today to share it with you, so take it away Kate!

The Sparklers Quilt

This 4th of July-themed quilt was calling out to me. It’s stunning, so no wonder it’s on the cover of the book! Although I love the red, white and blue (especially the blue background – how fun is that?!), I wanted to try the quilt in Christmas colors. Here is Pat’s version:

And here is mine:

For my quilt, I chose a collection to match my home decor. It’s called Christmas Morning by Lella Boutique (due out later this summer), and it has some soft greens with gray and red that I really love.

For the background I chose a basic from Robin Pickens called Thatched. Since I changed the background from dark to light color, I modified the pattern to use a dark fabric where the pattern calls for light, and used a light fabric where the pattern calls for dark. I printed a copy of the pattern and used notes to label my fabrics to keep everything straight! Pat’s book is well-written and the pattern instructions are detailed with diagrams and photos. It’s nice and easy to follow.

Holiday Celebrations gives instructions for traditional piecing, but I used some Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper to make the half square triangles and Flying Geese Foundation Paper Pads for the ribbon border. If you don’t have a quilt with a fancy inner border like this, you should try it. This was a first for me, and I like the result!

With those big blocks, Sparklers is a very satisfying quilt to make.

I used Scarlet Grunge for binding and Cuddle in Platinum as the backing. It’s sooo soft! The pantograph design is called Feliz Navidad by Urban Elementz, and it shows up beautifully on the Cuddle fabric.

Pat Sloan’s Holiday Celebrations Quilt Book has an amazing variety of quilts for all seasons, and I can’t wait to try more! You can follow the author, Pat Sloan, on Instagram (@quilterpatsloan) to see more of the quilts. Don’t forget to check out Pats’s Blog for coverage of the Holiday Celebrations Book Tour and visit all the stops on the tour!

  390. Christmas is my favorite holiday. But I love sewing special gifts for birthdays, they’re holidays, too!

  391. I love Holidays, I love everyday the Good Lord give me. But I must flip a coin between Memorial Day as this a very special day as so much of my Family and Husband were very active military and because of Men and Women that served and fought for my right to enjoy thinks in life. Christmas is the other side of the flip because with out the Birth of our Savior I could not even imagine how I could enjoy Pat Sloan and all the other fantastic individuals that bring me so much knowledge and my sewing world.

  392. Oh how I love the sparkler quilt, in both the patriotic and Christmas color ways. I love decorating for all the holidays, especially with quilted items.

  407. July 4th is my favorite because my sister comes home to Minnesota from California every year (except last year) and we put together a big family picnic where we get to spend time with siblings, their families, and cousins, and their families. The sparklers quilt would fit fight in with my other patriotic quilts.

  408. Christmas is my favorite as I love to decorate, make gifts to give and carry on family traditions that bring back so many memories while we create new memories.

  426. All Holidays are fun for my family. We celebrate all. But I really like Halloween because we decorate the yard with a pumpkin patch and the neighbors come by and take pictures of their kids in the pumpkin patch. My special needs grandson loves to see them come and enjoys giving out candy to all of them. So I hope I get one of the Books to help me make more items for the holidays.

  431. Christmas is my favorite holiday. Love this quilt in Christmas colors!

  432. I love sewing for Christmas and the respite it gives from all the hubbub of the season. But I think my favorite is still Easter with all the fresh new fabrics of Spring. Really like your versions of the Sparkler pattern tho, I will definitely be making that one.

  442. Christmas is my favorite. However, I think the 4th of July may be my second. I love all the red, white and blue designs. I tend to make more Christmas designs all year long for gifts.
Thanks so much for all the wonderful ideas and patterns you give.

  443. This quilt is beautiful-love that the color scheme is reversed(lights and darks). The cuddle on the back with the Feliz Navidad pantograph is perfect. And it’s great that you used the Triangles on a roll and flying geese paper for accuracy. Love it!

  445. Christmas 🥰. It’s also my first boys birthday so it’s an extra special day for us.

  446. I love making Christmas projects. Sewing a Christmas project just warms my heart!

  447. Miss Pat, Christmas is my favorite time of year and Holiday. I was raised by my grandparents and Christmas was our big holiday. My grandma and I would start making candies, fudge and many many dozens and kinds of cookies. My grandpa and I would start decorating the house the day after Thanksgiving. Hanging lights on all the windows and doors inside and out. Decorations , electric candle set sets in every window, the Nativity on the tv, special flower arrangements on the end tables and coffee table in our front living room, and finally the huge artificial Christmas Tre we would set up in the corner doorway between the good living room and living room so it could be seen if you were in either room. I would hold on to the tree why Pa crawled under it and attaches a small wire for hanging pictures on the wall , to the center pole of the tree to an eye hook in the corner of the floor to make sure the tree was stable and wouldn’t accidentally fall. Then the partial trimming of the tree would start. Pa always say to me”Sissy we need to help Santa by putting up the tree and putting all the lights on it for him because he is so busy on Christmas Eve. Then when he comes to everyone’s house he decorated their trees in his special way and fills stockings and leaves presents. So we will put the lights on our tree and the star on the top and Santa will put our ornaments on when he gets here.” So we would put the lights and star on the tree and hang stockings on the nails he would pound into the door casings between the good living room and living room. I lost my Pa in 1998 and I carried my Pa’s tradition on with my kids and still to this day I think of him when I am decorating my home with his same traditions every year.
