Mystery Bats & Boos Quilt and Stitch Along

At long last, we’re ready to share our first ever Halloween Mystery quilt along and stitch along with you! Thanks for your patience as we waited for the fabrics. Beginning August 2, we’ll release a FREE Bats & Boos quilt and cross stitch pattern each week for four weeks. Kimberly Jolly will guide you in sewing this quilt, so if you’re new to quilting (or want some company while you sew) this is a good one to try!

Each Monday from August 2 -23, we will release one video tutorial with a FREE quilt block pattern and cross stitch pattern. Join Kimberly Jolly as she shows you how to cut, stitch and sew a new block each week! We won’t reveal the look of the quilt or cross stitch pattern beforehand. That’s a secret. Bookmark this page, check back each week for updates, and subscribe to the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube channel so you never miss a video.

About the Quilt

The quilt finishes at 40.5″ square. If you want to sew a spooky version like ours, grab the mystery Bats & Boos Quilt Kit and Backing set!

We are sewing our quilt with Holiday Essentials – Halloween by Stacy Iest Hsu for Moda Fabrics! This collection is as cute as it is spooky.

To sew up this quilt, download the fabric requirements. 2″ Half Square Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper and  1.5” x 3” Flying Geese Quilt Block Foundation Paper are optional supplies to keep those blocks “on point.”

About the Cross Stitch


The Bats & Boos cross stitch measures 93w x 93h, finishing at 6.75″ square when stitched on 14 count Aida! 

The Bats & Boos Cross Stitch piece will be stitched in sections as we reveal a new portion of the pattern each week. This design was inspired by our Halloween-themed mystery quilt, so if you want a matching set, give this one a go.

The floss and cloth you choose are up to you, but we’ve collected some items to get your stitching off to a good start. To make your cross stitch just like ours, visit the Bats & Boos supplies page.

  22. Ordering kit today and will look forward to being in this sew along. It’s my first time doing a see along

    1. Just to let you know, the fabric with the bats and moons on the black background may not be what you get in your kit. I ordered the kit when it was first available and I received the gray spiderwebs on a black background which is the reverse of the black spiderwebs on gray background pictured above. I decided to order the original fabric because I did not want the fabrics in the bat to be the same design.

  37. On today’s note a Red sampler quilt along is mentioned. Is this happening in the future, or already done? I can’t find any information about this on this site.

  40. I downloaded the pattern and watched the video today. I don’t have the black fabric with the bats on it. I do have black with pindots (7/8 yd) and black spider web (5/8 yd) fabric. Not sure which fabric I’m supposed to use for the bats on block one.

  44. I purchased the fabric for this from you and I have a question. I’m sorry I don’t have the numbers of each one, but I just got started today, and as I was cutting the 4th set of blocks for the Bat Block, I noticed that the “bat fabric”that was sent to me is a white background, not a black background like it shows on the instructions I have. Since this is used for the bat wings, I don’t think such a light fabric is going to look very good. I admit, I haven’t seen any bat blocks shown with a bat with white, or light wings. All the other fabrics appear to be fine, Did I possibly get shorted?

  46. I am starting the center block-week 3 and noticed that the starpoint construction on page, 2 right column is a bit wacky. I am not going to sew it the way it is shown, but i worry about new quilters following the drawing perfectly then being disappointed.
    You probably have heard from others, but since was on my list to due today, hence the email.
    didn’t see an errata sheet, but maybe there is one…thanks for anpother fun project for the holidays.
