The next round of Moda Blockheads is just around the corner, and we’re so excited to see all of the creativity that comes out of it! Moda Blockheads 6 is shaping up to be another fun one with 24 free blocks and 27 weeks of quilty camaraderie. Kimberly is joining in on the fun and sewing hers in Abloom by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. Keep reading to hear how she is prepping for Moda Blockheads 6 and how you can get ready too!

You’re Invited!
Moda Blockheads 6 officially kicked off on Wednesday, May 21st, with an introduction week, and the big finale happens on Wednesday, November 19th. Each Wednesday morning, you can visit the Moda Inspiration + Resources blog for a post dedicated to that week’s block. There, you will find everything you need, including a link to that week’s free block pattern, a designer spotlight, and they will even have weekly videos on their YouTube Channel walking you through the block construction. You can watch the Welcome to Blockheads 6 video on their channel now!
How Will You Sew Along For Blockheads 6: Mystery or Roadmap?
This year, Moda is doing something a bit different. Instead of Blockheads 6 being a total mystery, this quilt along features most of the blocks in the for-purchase printed pattern My Favorite Color is Moda 2. Buying this printed pattern is entirely optional, as Moda will still be publishing the blocks for free each Wednesday on their blog and Facebook group. This means you get to pick whether you’re going to lean into the mystery or take advantage of the roadmap! To help you decide which is best for your quilting style, read the quilter profiles we made up below:
You might choose to keep it a MYSTERY if…
- You love the weekly surprises
- You’re excited to add 24 FREE block patterns to your quilting library
- You have access to a printer or prefer to keep your patterns digital
- You’re sewing from your stash/you want yours extra scrappy
- You want to use your blocks for multiple projects, or you’re planning to use one of the mystery settings from a designer
You might opt for the ROADMAP if…
- You prefer to have all the information up front
- You do not have access to a printer, and you prefer to have a paper copy
- You want specific fabric requirements to guide your planning
- You like to do all of your cutting before you start sewing
- You love the setting in My Favorite Color Is Moda 2
Whether you’re keeping it a mystery or love that this one has an optional roadmap, we will all have sew much fun growing our skills, engaging with a quilty community, and sharing inspiration!

Moda Blockheads 6 Fabric Requirements
Because this is a sampler quilt with different setting options to be revealed later, the actual fabric requirements will vary depending on how scrappy you like your blocks, which setting you pick, and other variables. Moda recommends starting with 30-35 assorted print fat quarters and 3-4 yards of a background fabric to make the blocks. With 39 fat quarters in the Abloom Fat Quarter Bundle and 4 yards of Coriander Seeds White X Print fabric on hand, Kimberly is ready to start sewing. If you choose to use the setting in My Favorite Color Is Moda 2, the exact fabric requirements are listed in the pattern.

I’m very excited to sew along with Moda blockheads again and will do it in the mystery format. I’m also encouraged to finish the previous ones that are still in block status or an unfinished quilt top. I still love them all!
I love mystery quilts. I am using Abloom as well! I have a half yard bundle & a bolt of Abloom background fabric. I am ready! Thanks for all you do for the quilting community!
Thanks for letting us know what Kimberly is using. Another designer is going to use a light gray and dark gray for her background. After I saw that, I wasn’t sure what I would do for a background. Maybe sticking to a white on white print is the best idea for me too. Excited to get started. It’s so much fun to see the new pattern every week.
