Kimberly’s Granny Square Crochet Blanket

So, while I was visiting Lori in Utah last year, I used her Chunky Thread and made a crochet granny square blanket! When I shared this little project with you on Instagram, so many of you asked for the details and I’m excited to be sharing them with you today. This blanket is a combination of a few of Lori’s tutorials and it works up super quick! Have fun making your own!

Supplies

For this blanket, I wanted something that wasn’t too big but was still cozy enough to cuddle up with while I was stitching. In total, I used 28 skeins of Chunky Thread, held it double, and used the 4.5mm hook from the Lori Holt 100% Cute Crochet Hooks pack for a chunky finish. Here is what you will need to pick up to make one just like mine:

2 Skeins Each of:

10 Skeins of:

I also kept my Vintage Scissors and the Lori Holt 100% Cute Yarn Needles close by for changing colors and weaving in ends!

The Granny Squares

To make the granny squares, I followed Lori’s How to Crochet a Granny Square Beginner tutorial and made a total of 9 granny squares. Each square is made with 11 rounds of the colored Chunky Thread and finished with 2 rounds of the Chamomile Chunky Thread. Here is that tutorial!

Attaching the Squares

Then, to attach the 9 granny squares together, I used the method that Lori teaches in Part #4 of her Crochet Series. Since I used the Chamomile Chunky Thread for the outer rounds of my granny squares, I used that same color to do the joining. Be sure to continue to hold the thread double as you do the joining single crochets!

Adding the Border

Once all 9 granny squares were attached, I used more of the Chamomile Chunky Thread to create a cute scalloped granny stitch border! Here are the crochet instructions:

Abbreviations to know:

  • sc – single crochet
  • st- stitch
  • dc- double crochet
  • ch- chain

Border Pattern:

Row 1 and 2: Granny stitch around the whole blanket

Row 3: 1 sc, skip one st [in the next st work ( 1 sc, 3 dc, 1 sc), skip one st, 1 sc]. Repeat [] until you reach the corner then, in the ch space work (1 sc, 5 dc, 1 sc), skip one st, 1 sc, and continue with the border repeat.

Re-visit the Great Granny Squared-Along

Did this project inspire you to add more granny squares to your project list?! If so, check out the Great Granny Squared-Along that we did to celebrate the summer with Lori back in 2022. Along with a crochet project, quilters, and stitchers got to join in on the fun! Pop over to the Celebrating the Summer with Great Granny Squared-Along blog post to learn all about it and pick up a copy of Lori’s second book, Great Granny Squared, if you don’t already have it on your shelf.

  1. Do you have this pattern on YouTube I would like to see it being done as I don’t know how to read patterns I haven’t been crocheting for that long yes I am a male that likes crotcheting

  2. Lori’s video only shows multi colored granny squares. What method did you use for a one color granny? Did you end each row or did you slip stitch over to the corner?
