Celebrating the Summer with Great Granny Squared-Along!

Celebrate the summer with Lori Holt and the classic Granny Square block, the star of Lori Holt’s second book, Great Granny Squared! Join us June 3 as we kick off summer with a unique sew along that features three ways to participate: quilting, crochet, and cross stitch!

Follow along with Kimberly as she quilts, crochets, and cross stitches through the summer!

Great Granny Squared Quilt Along

The quilt pattern, found in Great Granny Squared by Lori Holt, finishes at 72″ x 85.5″. See all the supplies for this sew along by heading to the Great Granny Squared supplies page.

To join the quilt along, follow along as we make two blocks each week all throughout June, July and August using the Bee Plaids Fat Quarter Bundle and the Great Granny Squared Quilt Book. You can also make the bonus quilt with any leftover squares!

Quilt Along Dates

If you want to stitch along with us, finish two blocks a week by the day listed on the chart and bookmark this page so you can visit it (the chart can be saved and printed by clicking on the image below and here is a version without the dates).

June 3-August 5: Two blocks a week

August 12: Sew the border

August 19: Finish up! Be sure to subscribe to our Fat Quarter Shop YouTube Channel and check out our Friday Livestreams to stay up to date on Kimberly’s Great Granny Squared quilting.

Find out more about the backing, borders, and background in the video mentioned below.

The fabric requirements are available in Great Granny Squared by Lori Holt, but here are Kimberly’s estimates for what she’s using:

  • 33 Fat Quarters from the Bee Plaids Fat Quarter Bundle (not using Pewter or the background prints)
  • From Fat Quarters – Cut A to G (if using normal binding do not cut Fabric G)
  • 3 ¾ yards Background from C6384-Coral: Cut Fabrics H, I, and K
  • 2 yards to 3 ¼ yards (more if cutting length of fabric) Sashing and Border from C12037-Cayenne: Cut Fabrics J, L, and M
  • Binding is C12032-Frosting
  • The Backing is 5 1/3 yards of 44” wide or 2 ¼ yards of 108” wide

To sew up this quilt, pick up a copy of Great Granny Squared by Lori Holt, some 4.5″ Square in a Square Quilt Block Foundation Paper for the border, and check out the May 20 Livestream on Fat Quarter Shop’s YouTube Channel.

Granny Square Crochet Along

To join the crochet along, just grab your crochet hook and your favorite colors of Chunky Thread and see how many squares you can make this summer! Kimberly’s goal is to make 81 squares for a 9 x 9 crib blanket, but you can go at your own pace. Lori is starting with one skein of each color, for a total of 32 skeins.

Learn how to crochet a granny square in Lori’s step-by-step video.

  1. Love the granny squares!!! Can you tell me where to get the aqua frame shown with the 4 granny squares?

  2. So beautiful! Is it necessary to buy all the colors of Chunky Thread for the crochet-along? I don’t think I can afford it! ☺️ Or is there an alternative? Thanks!

    1. Hi Pari! Thank you so much. You don’t need to purchase every color. You can start with a Sampler Package or choose a few of your favorite colors. The project is entirely up to you and your color preference.

  3. I’m kidding up the granny square cross stitch along. There’s one color that doesn’t seem to fit. The thread is called Jade number 4129 or 991 DMC. I can’t find it on the chart. Is this going to be a filling color for sashing in between granny squares?

  4. I already started on my granny squares, cannot wait until the stiching starts on June 6 !!!!

    1. Yes please! I would love a written crochet pattern too. I often crochet when camping off grid and watching a video is not an option.

      1. If you watch the tutorial that Miss Lori has you can write it as she goes along! It’s a very good tutorial! I’m enjoying making mine!

  5. Regarding the Granny Square Crochet along, my questions are:

    1. How many skeins do I need to do the 81 blocks?
    2. How many skeins (of one color) do I need to join the granny squares for the 81 block blanket?

I haven’t been able to locate this info on the blog post.

    1. Hi Gwen!
Kimberly set a goal for herself to make 81 Granny Squares, but she hasn’t completed them yet since the crochet along is just starting. We aren’t sure how many skeins will be needed and apologize that we are unable to give you that information as of right now.

  6. The granny squares are so cute! I have about 10 done my puppy doesn’t care for me doing it cause it’s in her way! Can’t wait for remainder of the thread to be back in stock!

  7. Hi,
Would love to join the Crochet-Along. Those pin
cushions are really cute…thanks for sharring
    them…have a great day!

  8. I have negative memories of the 1970s afghans made from Granny Squares with SCRATCHY feeling/not cozy feelings. I assume there are much softer yarns these days that would
    work? Washable, of course!!

    Thanks! Kate

  9. Thank you so much for the “Granny Square” information . I managed to fathom it from a craft demo regularly shown on UK tv — however I am a newbie p & q but already prefer the diagonal effect instead of the square-on patchwork. I will also have a go at the crochet blankets etc ,etc.
Thanks a million for the info and I love Lori Holt on “youtube” – my go-to
    inspiration………. yours AF

  10. Would love to have an update on when the Chunky Thread will be back in stock. I check three times a day! I have a few skeins that I scrounged up since the start, but am waiting on pins and needles (and hooks!) for the rest.
