Designer Tidbits: Skipping Stone Studios

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Hollis Faye of Skipping Stone Studios to the Jolly Jabber. Skipping Stone Studios’ latest fabric collection is Paisley Denim from Clothworks Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Paisley Denim collection?
A: I always have fresh cut flowers around the house and it was one particularly magnificent bunch of white roses in a blue vase that sparked the idea for Paisley Denim. I  just love blue and white. I am also a collector of vintage textiles, thus the touch of paisley in the line.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: One song I listened to a lot while working on this collection is “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: The print which gave the collection its name, Paisley Denim, is Y0900-30. I loved mixing the comfortable feel of an old worn pair of jeans with my love of vintage paisleys.

Q:What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A:I love this little girl’s dress from the Ruffles pattern by Olive Ann. The gals at Clothworks made a sample of the pattern for Quilt Market and sent me the photo.

Q:What is your favorite part of working in the fabric industry?
A: Seeing the projects people make with my fabric is so fun! I am amazed by the endless creativity in this industry!

Q:Can you give us a sneak-peak of your next fabric collection?
A: Adrienne, a variation on the blue and white phase I’m in, is scheduled to come out March 2012.

Q:What is your absolute favorite thing in your house?
A: My antique sideboard that sits in my living room has always been my favorite possession. It was passed down to me from my great grandmother and holds some of my treasured family photos, letters and other special things.

Q:Which project stands out in your memory as your all-time favorite?
A: My all time favorite project has to be the June’s Backyard quilt designed by Anita Peluso featured in the September/October 2010 issue of McCall’s Quilting. June’s Backyard was one of my favorite collections to begin with, but Anita’s design took my fabric to a whole new level that just blew me away!

Q:Where do you do your best thinking? Can we see a photo of your studio?
A: I do my best thinking in my garden. Pruning my rose bushes or plucking dead blooms…these are mindless tasks that allow me to be inspired by nature and dream up new fabric ideas.

Q:What is your favorite snack food?
A:Berries! I try to grow as much of my own fresh produce as I can, but my very favorite food to eat straight from the garden are my berries—especially blueberries!

Q:What is your one guilty pleasure in life?
A:That’s an easy one—chocolate of course!
