Designer Tidbits: Horizon by Kate Spain (Plus Giveaway!)

Hi everyone! Kate Spain is here today to chat about her newest collection for Moda Fabrics, Horizon. This sea glass inspired collection is filled with cool blues and soft lavenders and is a twist from Kate’s previous collections. Read on to find out more!

Q: Tell us a little about the Horizon collection. What were you inspired by?
A: Thanks for having me on the Jolly Jabber! I’m so happy to share a little more about Horizon with your readers. For much of my life, I’ve lived close to the water (still do) and one of my favorite things to do in any season is to take walks along the shore. Even from day-to-day,  there are noticeable changes in the scenery…whether it’s the sun illuminating bright green sea grasses, or shorebirds diving and bobbing on the waves, or the blend of colors in the sky at different times of day. I love to notice these shifts and that they’re all set against a single, tranquil constant; the horizon line. Here is a photo taken from the end of our street:

And this photo is of sand at low tide that I took on Christmas Day last year.

There is always something to be inspired by!

Horizon is a bit of a departure from my usual style in that I began by hand-carving blocks and printing them to create the repeat patterns. It was the first time I’d ever tried to do this and really had no idea how the process would translate to fabric. But I am so happy with how it turned out! I love that the irregularity, imperfection and handmade quality of the block prints remains intact in the finished fabric. Here are several of the blocks I hand-carved and some of the patterns I created from these blocks

The color palette for Horizon was inspired by bits of beautiful, luminous sea glass I’ve collected from many shores over the years โ€” in hues of bright green, crystal blue, turquoise, and brilliant cobalt. These are some of my favorite colors and I love the way they resonate harmoniously with the textural designs of the block prints.

Q: What is your design process when beginning a new collection?
A: I really love the freedom of being consumed by the creative process so I typically start with either a color palette or a very simple, unrefined idea or area of interest: woodland gardens, ceramic tiles, Caribbean blossoms etc. Then I usually draw or paint or as with Horizon, carve. This gives way to exploring how colors interact, seeing how the scale and rhythm of patterns play together, and then composing and refining these elements to balance the collection as a whole. I guess it’s a bit like sailing where you can be drifting along and then suddenly a gust of wind fills your sails and off you go! I love the creative process because you never really know when the wind of inspiration will arrive or which direction it’ll come from. It could happen early on at the beginning of a project, or somewhere else. The thing you can be sure of is that once it arrives, you get completely swept up and carried away toward a new creative horizon!

Q: What is your favorite part about being a designer?
A: Every single part of it. Itโ€™s what I love to do. Working with my hands is definitely a big part of it for me. The process of carving blocks was so inspiring to me that I may have to do it again. If anyone is interested, we’re going to be offering a limited edition of my woodblock prints on our shop site. Each one was hand-printed by me and a wonderfully skilled neighbor did all the framing. Both framed and unframed prints are available.

Q: What projects do you hope to see made with Horizon?
A: I’ve already seen some amazing quilts being made with Horizon and will keep my eyes peeled for others! Also, I teamed up with a wonderful sewist/photographer, Becca DuVal  who has brought her amazing talents to creating three “looks” for children’s outfits and a small “Day Tripper” bag. We’re featuring her projects, the patterns she used and her photos on my blog now, so please come for a visit! Here’s an adorable peek:

And what’s on my creative horizon? Maybe some of this.

It’s called Paradiso and will be shown at the International Quilt Market this October.

  1. This Horizon collection fits right into my sewing room-I don't live near the beach, but I have the beach in my room, and these will fit right in. My room has windows facing east and north, and some summery curtains out of Horizon would celebrate the sunshine! Thanks for the opportunity, and your fantastic blog-I always feel up to date in the quilting world after visiting! Peggy Terzian

  2. I'd love to make a quilt for my "blue" room — a TV room decorated in blues and greens! Beautiful collection!! Thanks for the chance to win!!

  3. Horizon is a lovely bright change from the teals and lime greens so popular now. Your sand picture on Christmas day inspires me to make a pouffy duvet cover – tufted with big, fake pearls for spring.

  4. Not exactly sure what I would do. Maybe tech cozies? But the fabric would inspire something I am sure. Love, love, love the color range.

  5. I would always make quilts with any fabric.
I have huge jars filled with sea glass collected from beaches all over the world. often a piece or two of sea glass and a few grains of sand in a bottle were my momentos of a journey

  6. I love the beachy colors of this collection. They feel "softer" than some of Kate's other collections and I would love to make a drapey quilt with a nod to the sea…something to wrap up in on a cool, breezy day.

    caribousmom (at) aol (dot) com

  7. I love Kate Spain's fabric design, and I think these blues and greens are my favorite so far. I have a quilt already in my head that they would be perfect for!

  8. Gorgeous! I love reading about the inspiration behind this collection and Kate's process for creating the artwork. I don't live near the ocean but we spend time on nearby Lake Michigan, so I would love to make a beach quilt or picnic quilt or maybe a sleeping bag.

  9. I would make a quilt from these fabrics – I love the serenity of the colors and designs. Working on this quilt would be a joy, especially during a snowy winter! Thanks for the chance to win!

  10. What lovely colors! I think I am going to finally make a quilt for the bed my husband and I share. I will have to hide it when I have guests, so that I won't be charmed into giving it away. Again. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. To me this fabric is begging to be made into a throw quilt to have at the beach. It has all the colors of a lazy afternoon on the deck watching the waves roll in!

  12. I love love love the colors in this line and the patterns. I want to make a bunch of cute little dresses for my daughters from them! Too bad summer is almost over. Maybe I'll save it for next years beach trip?

  13. I want to wear this collection, so a soft-silhouette quilted thigh-length coat comes to mind. Our fall in Myrtle Beach is usually the best season for beach walks, but a light coat is a good idea.

  14. I have been waiting for months for this fabric to be released!! I have 2 quilts in mind. First is a Swoon quilt and the second, I plan to use the fabric in a Mystery Quilt Along starting in January.

So excited about the pattern and beautiful colors of this fabric. Impressive!!

  15. What a beautiful and vast collection of colors from the seaside!! I would make a quilt for my son and new daughter-in-law who both LOVE any shoreline and beach! Thanks for the giveaway.

  16. This fabric line is so bright and happy! I would make a tablecloth and curtains for my kitchen with it. Thanks!

Please click on the delaineelliott above for my email link.

  17. It is beautiful! I am thinking a new purse and wallet set for me to get through a dark NY winter coming up – and then a quilt with the rest.

  18. Oh, we love the beach! We enjoy spending time with our 4 dogs, smelling the smells, listening to the waves come and go, squishing sand between our toes as we wait for the sun to set. I would definately make a quilt out if this collection to remind us of our beach visits as we brace ourselves for another gray & frigid Michigan winter!!

  19. I would love to make some summery dresses for my daughter and myself. Thanks for the chance to win some of this gorgeous fabric.

  20. I love this line…. I love anything that Kate Spain has designed!! If I won, I would definitely make a quilt and it would be for our master bedroom because it would match perfectly with everything we have!! Thanks for the chance!!

  21. Love the colors in this collection! I would make a large quilt with the fat quarters, or I would make lots of my 4-fat-quarter cinch sack pattern. Whatever is made with this fabric line is sure to be gorgeous!

  22. OMGoodness this a pretty fabric line! I would make a quilt for our travel trailer. It would fit perfectly!
    Thank you for the giveaway!

  24. Love the colors as it makes me think I am at the beach all of the time. I have two projects in mind – one is a quilt on Kate Spains blog that has large waves and perfect for a baby quilt. Second quilt is one of Judy Niemeyer's patterns or Kaffe Fasset's triangles pattern. Probably have to do both patterns to see how the fabrics play with each other. Love the texture so much with these line of fabrics.

  25. I love the color combinations, they are so awesome! I would like to make a Tranqual sea quilt. That's the first thing I thought of. My caught in law loves the beach, but lives in the mountains, she would love it!

  26. So beautiful – this is my fave colour palette. Absolutely love each and every fabric. I think I would actually have to make a quilt or bed runner for my room – keep these fabrics close, rather than give them away.

  27. I would love to make some clothes with this line for my daughter– so summery an fresh. Thanks for the chance to win! Sarah:crjandsbj(at)netzero(dot)com

  29. I would love, love, love to make a Seashore Drive quilt with the Horizons collection – it's absolutely beautiful! Thank you for a chance to win a fat quarter bundle!

  30. Having just come home from a week on the Outer Banks with several pieces of sea glass I would really love to see those prints on some big chunky pillows!!

  31. Kate Spain's Honey Honey collection was the very first fabric I bought when I started quilting last year ๐Ÿ™‚ I'd love to make a small teepee or pup tent for my 2 year old daughter. The calming colours would create a perfect space for her to look at her books and relax.

  32. I would have to say…a new quilt for my bed. I have been wanting to change my room to the sea glass color scheme, and this would be the perfect beginning!

  36. I think the horizon collection would be great on a quilt top Im hoping to make soon. it will have beautiful sea shells embroidery with the horizon sea-glass inspired borders!

Fabulous giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win.

  39. I would probably make a quilt and I have two patterns to sew; one called Sea Glass by Talk of The Town which would be ideal with this fabric and the other by Zen Chic I think it's called Open Your Window. Beautiful fabric!

  40. Maybe a quilt for my mother-in-law since she likes lavender? Definitely something with curves. I never know till see a fabric in my hands what I will do!

  41. Been wanting to do a quilt for my ex mother in law in blues for a long time. Her favorite colors. I like the colors also. So pretty.

  46. This I think is my favorite collection so far with all the blues and purples in it. Ok, I've said that with all of Kate's collections. LOL

Since I never have made my lap quilt for the van and winter is coming as much as I'd like to ignore that fact, I think this might be perfect for that. I also think it would make a great little dress for my granddaughter. She's still small enough that it doesn't take much fabric.

  47. My granddaughter would love a dress out of these fabrics. She would want one of each color!!Need more time to sew! Great giveaway. Thank you vkh6210@gmail dot com

  48. We just had the best beach vacation ever. I would love to make my hubby a quilt to reflect that memory. Something beach themed for sure. I may have to design it myself.

  49. I noticed this collection when it was on the coming soon page months ago. I've already painted my bedroom to match! I have an It's Sew Emma pattern I am going to use to make myself a new queen sized quilt. The lavenders have been colors I've used since I was a kid in my bedroom and I grew up and added the blues, the tones are beautiful in this fabric!

  50. This collection has all my favorite colors so I'll be making a quilt for myself. Depending on the scale of the prints, I may go with a layer-cake size HST or something more complex. I can't wait to get my hands on this fabric!

  51. Fabulous designs and colors! I would use the fabrics for a first "big girl bed" quilt for my youngest granddaughter. These colors would be a perfect decorating theme.
Thanks for the chance to participate.
    Susan Grancio

  52. It sounds lazy and crazy, but I love a couple of strip quilts that I have done in blues for babies. I think I might do another one. The patterns would look like movement in the water. I have lots of people clamoring for one.

  53. Pillow cases for brother new house, tote bag for myself, lap quilt for mom and MIL, placemats for a friend. The possibilities are endless!

  54. My niece loved horizon range. I was showing her all my fabric in my stash, hoping she would choose something from there, but she was hesitant. As soon as I showed her horizon online, her face lit up, this was the ONE!
Now we are having trouble deciding on a pattern. She is ten and I want to make a large twin size quilt but in a pattern she will not grow out of, so we will just keep looking. Thanks for the opportunity, would love the fat qtr bundle, then I might be able to make myself one as well โ˜บ๏ธ

  61. I live on the water, too, in our trawler boat, so these colors are right up my alley! I would definitely make a quilt for our stateroom. I've been pinning patterns like mad on Pinterest. One of them is sure to be perfect with this beautiful collection.

  63. Hello, Horizon! I've searched for a couple of years for fabric to sew a sea glass inspired quilt. My dear friend, also an artist, collects sea glass when at the beach. We live in Kansas so our trips to the ocean are years apart. A quilt stitched with Horizon fabric evokes coastal thoughts. For the quilt pattern, I'm contemplating the xoxo pattern from Me and My Sister Designs, as she signs her correspondence with "xoxo." Thank you for your beautiful fabric.

  64. The Horizon Fabrics are BEAUTIFUL!!! I would make a quilt and keep it all to myself. I would wrap myself up with it in the middle of winter and remind myself of relaxing beach days. I love the watery colors
I just moved my parents from coastal Maryland to the mountainous suburbs of Northern Virginia. what a change for them. They are both 91.
I would make them matching quilts with this waters edge themed fabric. I just love it.
They are both from Holland and always lived near water, so this is a big change to view out of the window now at mountains.
