At Fat Quarter Shop, we love having designers come to our studio and show us the creative aspects of sewing that they are most passionate about! We recently had our good friend Janet Clare (@janetclare on Instagram) come visit us from across the pond and show all of her books, including Freya & Fred, the inspiration behind her upcoming Freya & Friends line. She also walked us through the steps of how to make her Sailing the Blue Quilt. On top of that, Janet showed us how she uses freemotion quilting to write and draw, something we have never seen before! It is just one more way she infuses her personality and charm into her quilts. We filmed 10 videos with her (within two days!) and here are just a few we wanted to highlight!
The Freya & Fred Book Showcase
In this video, we join Janet Clare as she explores the Freya & Fred book, a book inspired by paper dolls Janet played with as a child. With over seven quilts and 14 additional embroidery and craft project, this nostalgic book is packed with so many fun projects. Janet walks you through the story of Freya & Fred and all of the cute projects she embedded in her book.
The Sailing the Blue Quilt Tutorial
In this video, Janet Clare walks us through the steps of making the Sailing the Blue Quilt using the Marti Michell Storm at Sea templates. The classic colors and prints used in this quilt makes this one that will last for generations.
A Field Guide Book Showcase
In this video, we’re guided by Janet Clare through her book, A Field Guide, which is all about enjoying nature and taking in small moments when they’re happening. This book is filled with fun projects inspired by nature, including applique and patchwork quilts starring birds, flowers, trees, butterflies and more. Filled with 27 projects, there’s truly something for everyone!
Artisan Apron Pattern Showcase with Janet Clare
In this video, Janet shows us the versitality of an apron, not only for use as a uniform to wear to get into your creative space but also as a way to store wonderful memories! She walks you through the Artisan Apron Pattern using her collection, Ahoy Me Hearties.
Freemotion Writing and Drawing on Fabric
In this video, Janet shows us one of her very unique talents, Freemotion Writing and Drawing on Fabric! With tips and tricks on how to freemotion, she guides you through this whimsical art. All you need is some fabric, batting, polyester thread, and a little bit of courage!
We loved having Janet Clare as our special guest in the FQS studio! She is a true artist and encourages everyone to be inspired by nature when creating projects. We are honored she stopped by on her trip to the US and can’t wait to have her back!
