Classic and Vintage Series: Prairie Queen

We’re back with another pattern in our Classic & Vintage series, the Prairie Queen Quilt!  In our Classic & Vintage series, we focus on traditional quilt blocks and add a modern twist! The Prairie Queen block is created by piecing multiple squares together with half-square triangles while choosing colors carefully! This technique provides a unique effect repeated throughout the quilt. You’ll be able to make these blocks using Triangles On A Roll paper, so you have some help along the way and you won’t believe how quickly you’ll be sewing up this quilt!

Our complete Prairie Queen quilt pattern gives instructions for making crib, lap, twin and queen-sized quilts. The block finishes at 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2.” To make a quilt just like ours, we have the Prairie Queen Quilt Kit available! You’ll also want to pick up to matching backing set.

We made ours in Flour Garden by Linzee Kull McCray for Moda Fabrics. Check out the full collection with all those prairie flowers that are sew cute you’ll want to pick up a bundle.

Who’s Quilting Along?

We have some wonderful quilty friends who pioneered their own versions of the Prarie Queen Block to show us how it’s done. Click on each photo to see it in detail.

Sherry of Powered By Quilting sewed with Bella Solids by Moda Fabrics and also recommends measuring twice before cutting and sewing this block.

We hope you enjoy quilting your own Prairie Queen Classic and Vintage quilt and please share your work using #PrairieQueenQuilt.

Happy Quilting!

  1. I really like this block. I will use it for the 12-fat quarter clubs that I subscribe to. I also like that if you cut carefully, you can get a block from one 10-inch square, so I can use it for layer cakes also.

  2. I believe you meant to write above that the block finishes at 12″ x 12″. I questioned the 12-1/2″ measurement and checked the pattern. Yes, the blocks finish at 12″ x 12″. Love the fabric line!

  3. Just got my kit this morning. Love the fabric colors. The Triangles on a Roll needed comes with the kit. I didn’t know this and ordered some. I will have extra for future projects if needed.
