Button Lovers’ Club: FREE Ocean-Inspired Project Idea!

Calling all Button Lovers! Have you signed up for the Button Lovers’ Club yet? The upcoming September box of buttons includes 86 hand-dyed buttons in a variety of sizes and styles. The color?  OCEAN! When your buttons arrive you’ll be ready to dive right into this fabulous project we created just for you: a Seahorse Mini Quilt with a FREE downloadable template!

Finished Size: 9 ½” x 9 ½”

Materials Used

Button Lovers’ Club September buttons: Ocean color
White or off-white background fabric of your choice
Aqua Fabric (behind Seahorse)
Aurifil Thread
Binding Fabric
Free Downloadable Template

Step One: Download the Seahorse Template here. Select a solid piece of fabric – we chose an aqua color that coordinates well with the buttons (Bella Solids Caribbean). Fuse solid fabric to a sheet of Fusible Web. Once fabric has cooled, use a Frixion pen to trace the Seahorse template to the wrong side of the fabric. TIP: We used a light table to trace. Once you have your Seahorse drawn, cut out the seahorse shape along your traced line.
Step Two: Fuse your Seahorse template to a white piece of fabric. We cut our white fabric 12” square. First find the center of the white fabric then place your Seahorse in the middle and fuse in place with your iron.

Step Three: Now the fun part: start laying out your buttons! You want to get an idea of which buttons fit where before sewing, using the blue seahorse area as a guide. Don’t worry if your buttons extend past the blue. It will look adorable regardless!

Step Four: Move the buttons to the side while you sew on the buttons one by one. If you gently slide them off the fabric it will keep the seahorse shape nicely. Using two strands of AuriFloss, start sewing on each button (we used Jade AuriFloss). We suggest starting with the tail and the tiny buttons.
Step Five: Once you have completely filled in your seahorse, consider adding a few buttons near the mouth to represent air bubble floating to the surface of the water. (optional)
Step Six:  Trim your block. We used a Creative Grids 9 ½” Square it Up ruler. Trim slowly – you won’t have much grip because the ruler is on top of the buttons.
Step Seven: Trim your backing piece to 9 ½” square. Layer your pieces with some batting and baste. We used Soft and Stable for our mini quilt to keep it nice and firm when hung on the wall.

Step Eight: Bind your Mini Quilt as desired.
Step Nine: An optional step to show more Jade AuriFloss:  Hand stitch just to the inside of the binding. It creates a nice frame for your adorable Seahorse.
Step Ten: Hang and ENJOY!

Hello, everyone! We’re back with another fun project you can make with your buttons from the Button Lovers’ Monthly Club!  This darling bee applique was designed by Pat Sloan, and Kimberly combined a Simple Zipper Bag with some applique and the yellow buttons from July’s Button Lovers’ Monthly Club box to make her bee bag.  SEW cute!  Bee sure to check out Pat’s version of the bag, too!  She made it with some of her Hometown Girl Fabrics!

Is your quilter’s heart buzzing with excitement over this darling bee bag? Great! Then download our FREE template, get your July buttons, and start stitching. What’s that? Not a member of the club yet?

To make the Appliqued Bee Bag:

1. Sew yourself a Simple Zipper Bag, after watching our Simple Zipper Bag video.
2. Using the FREE Bee Template designed by Pat Sloan, trace the bee and scallop on your fabric. Templates are actual size and do not include a 1/4″ seam allowance.
3. Assemble the bee on the scallop, using your favorite applique method.
4. To add the antennae, use the template. Use three strands of embroidery floss and a backstitch.
5. Applique the bee and scallop to your finished bag, using your favorite applique method.
6. Add your fabulous buttons to the bee applique!

Take a peek at Pat’s version of the bag. It’s nearly as sweet as honey!

We hope you love this bee-yootiful Appliqued Bee Bag as much as we do. Happy Sewing!

Button Lover’s Club: Button Heart Throw Pillow!

Hi everyone, it’s Kimberly! I love thread and buttons, so when we started the Button Lovers’ Monthly Club I was inspired!  I made a quick project to help inspire all of our club members – a Button Heart Throw Pillow! This pillow was a quick and easy project and it makes a great gift!

Not a member of the club yet?

Here are the supplies you need to make this pillow:

Buttons from two of the June Button Lovers’ Monthly Club boxes
1 yard Mochi Linen Unbleached Solid for background and backing
¼ yard Grunge Basics Rose Yardage for binding
 #24 Primitive Gatherings Chenille needle
AuriFloss Bright Pink #2425
FREE Button Lovers’ Heart Template
14” pillow form

Pillow Assembly Instructions:

Step One:  Download our Heart Template and trace the heart on a 18” x 21” rectangle of your background fabric using a Frixion pen.  Using two strands of Aurifloss attach the buttons to the heart.  I used two stitches on each button.

Step Two:  When you are finished adding the buttons trim the block to 12 ½” square.

Step Three:  Cut two 14” x 21” rectangles for the backing. Fold each rectangle in half for a 10.5” x 14” rectangle.  With the folds in the center, overlap the backing pieces 3”.  Place the top and back together and top stitch 1/8” from the edge.  Trim the backing.

Step Four:  Cut two 2” binding strips and join on the diagonal.  Add the binding and you are done!

I hope you love this beautiful, button-y pillow as much as we do. Happy Sewing!
