We’re shaking things up on the Jolly Jabber! We are bringing life back to our old projects with Blog Remixes! Every other Thursday until November 15, we will be throwing it back to one of our tutorials with new fabrics, notions, tips and tricks to inspire you to make your next project. Whether you’ve seen this project before or it’s your first time, there’s a remix project for everyone. This week’s remix is the Coffee Koozie! This easy and very practical project makes for a great, eco-friendly accessory to your coffee cups.
Project Requirements
Here’s what you’ll need to make this project:
- One Mini Charm Pack (or 12 2.5″ squares)
- 4.5″ x 12.5″ rectangle of backing fabric
- 4.5″ x 12.5″ rectangle of batting
- One 3/4″ button
- One elastic hair band (or 3″ length of elastic)
- Coordinating thread
- FREE PATTERN for the Coffee Koozie

We even had some awesome quilty friends make their version of the Coffee Koozie:
Quilty Staffer Nancy made her coffee koozie using Bungalow by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics.
She made another coffee koozie using Emma’s Garden by Debbie Beaves for Maywood Studio Fabrics.
Quilty Staffer Susan made her coffee koozies using Meraki by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics. She taped the middle of the hairband before sewing it in between the layers so it would stay pinched when she sewed it into the seam. She also says, snipping the curved edges of the koozie in a few places before turning, topstitching, and pressing, made the edges lie flatter.
Quilty Staffer Deborah made her set of 4 coffee koozies using Garden Variety by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. She used a different bee fabric for each lining piece and Just Another Button Company buttons on her coffee koozies.
Deidra of Quilty Obsession (@quiltyobsession) made her coffee koozie using Sugar Plum Christmas by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda Fabrics. She says, “It’s “Christmas in July!” Stashing these away to use as Christmas gifts during the busy holiday season. Add a mug, coffee gift card and you’re set!”.
Louise of Louise Charlton (@louisecharlton) made her coffee koozie using fabrics by Tamara Kate for Michael Miller Fabrics. She used bright and cheerful fabrics (to brighten up a plain white cup of coffee!) and made 2 Koozies. For the first one, she used leftover 4 patch squares from another project, but found that it looked too busy…. so for her second one, she used a pretty blue fabric. And loved her big cheery buttons! This was a fun, easy and fast project!

Karen of Karen’s Sewing Room (@karenmaloley) made her coffee koozie using Eco by Michael Miller Fabrics. She thought it was an appropriate use of the fabric theme. The purpose of the coffee koozie is to avoid using the single-use paper sleeves for coffee take-outs!

I’m a new quilter and I’m confused on the next step after sewing the first two 2patches onto the batting.
Hi, Jordanna! This is a technique usually called “quilting as you go,” where you quilt your top pieces to the batting as you move along, rather than finishing your entire top and then quilting to the batting.
