2019 Charity Quilt Along – Block 8

Welcome to the Fat Quarter Shop 2019 charity quilt along, the Threadology Quilt Along! We are so excited to present the eighth and final (can you believe it?) block in this year’s quilt along, the Cross with a Cross Block (free pattern and video tutorial)! After this block, we will be showing how to piece your quilt (the finishing pattern) and how to do the pieced backing (the backing pattern). We are sold out of the Threadology Quilt Kit and Backing set so if you are just joining us, you can find the full fabric requirements to make a Threadology Quilt just like ours (we used the Little Snippets collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics). We will also be posting all the patterns and videos posted so far on our Threadology Quilt Along page!

BLOCK 8 PATTERN – CROSS WITH A CROSS

Please note if you are sewing Threadology Block 8 that the pattern has been corrected.

The new pattern is version “8a” where unit E on the 6″ block is 4″ long.

Our apologies!

Also, be sure to read to the bottom for information on extra settings we will be doing for the Threadology blocks this year as well as our Block 7 Giveaway! [We have reached all 4 goals for donations to Make-A-Wish and all of the links for all bonus setting patterns are available below.]

Here is the video tutorial for the Cross with a Cross Block!

Together, Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will match up to $20,000 of your donations in 2019 to our Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas fundraiser, tripling each dollar you donate.

This year’s charity quilt along will benefit Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas! We are offering all of the patterns to make this quilt for free, we just ask that you donate $5 per pattern download to this amazing organization and 100% of the proceeds from the pattern downloads will be donated to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. We are partnering with Moda Fabrics once again, who has generously worked with us since we started doing these quilt alongs to benefit our community (see the Make-A-Wish video HERE).

Threadology Quilt Along

We have a great lineup of quilters quilting along with us! Our quilters used a mix of the quilt kit (we are sold out however you can find the full fabric requirements to make a Threadology Quilt just like ours using Little Snippets collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics) and their own fabrics to make their blocks. Click on each of the photos to see them up close and see what collections they used as well as tips and tricks they have to make the eighth block!

Piecing Tips

When adding unit D to unit B, you will be tempted to turn the triangles the wrong way. Trust the layout and test it twice before sewing those little guys together. Or trust me – you’ll become good friends with your seam ripper 😉 You may even find that cutting blocks B and D a bit larger than called for will allow you to make a larger block and trim to the right size. Experiment with one block and let us know in the comments below what worked best for you!

Melissa Corry says, “When adding the B and D units, be sure and make your seam go directly through the B and D point intersection, even if you have to leave 1/4″ slightly over. That will keep your block nice and square and your points lined up.” In a similar vein, Pat Sloan suggests to “Have the triangle on the bottom when sewing these [units together]. That way you can see the intersection and won’t cut off your points.”

For the final step in assembly, Jen says, “I pressed the triangles in half to find the center. Then sewed them to the blocks.” Jen has a nice tutorial over on her blog.

As Sherri McConnell notes, it’s all-important to make sure your 1/4″ seam allowances are on target!

    1. Hi Deborah! The cutting in the Block 8 pattern is correct for pieces A & E in the 6″ size, but i understand it’s nervewracking to trim down such a small unit. You can cut Fabric E at 1.5″ x 4″ so there is a bit more material to perfectly center and square up your 4.75″ square unit. I hope that helps!

      1. Thanks Jocelyn. I figured it had to be me.😂 Cutting it longer has helped.
