There is nothing tastier than a nice layer cake! A fabric layer cake of course. The layer cake is a versatile precut than works well with SEW many different quilt patterns. We recommend every quilter have a layer cake or two in their stash for when that perfect pattern comes around and you want to cut yourself a slice of perfect!
This week, we’ve gathered a list of our favorite layer cake-friendly patterns. Let’s bust your stash open or pick out a new collection and get started. All of these patterns are downloadable PDF patterns so you can print them at home and get started right away!
Whether they are called layer cakes, 10″ stackers or 10″ squares, these bundles are layered with quilty goodness. Layer cakes are available with most collections and typically include 42 pieces of fabric, though that number can vary.

1. Composition by It’s Sew Emma
Download Composition by It’s Sew Emma for a colorful challenge! With patchwork half-square triangles, the possibilities for with quilt are endless. The Composition Quilt Pattern features one block with three different layout options. Have fun with this rainbow of a quilt!

2. Nova by GE Designs
Nova is an easy quilt to sew up, but it looks challenging! You can achieve this impressive look with the Stripology Squared ruler by GE Designs for Creative Grids. Nova is a star-of-a-quilt to sew up! The colors you choose to sew it with will give you a different look every time that will have you shooting for the moon.
3. Four-Square by A Quilting Life Designs
Four-Square is a quick and easy quilt to sew, so it’s perfect for beginners. If you haven’t sewn with a Layer Cake before, Four-Square is worth a try. You’ll want to sew with a collection that uses large prints you really like because the squares in this quilt will really show off what you are sewing with.
4. Layer Cake Links by Fat Quarter Shop
Layer Cake Links is a totally FREE PDF pattern using two layer cakes! You’ll sew up this delicious treat easily with an impressively finished quilt to show for it. Kimberly filmed a helpful video tutorial, check it out here.

5. Clambake by Thimble Blossoms
Don’t clam up! You can sew bake this quilt up easy. Clambake is a unique quilt in that it looks like scales or even sequins. Clambake uses on layer cake for a 39″ x 43″ baby quilt or two layer cakes for a 69″ x 74.5″ lap quilt.
