Add a little extra softness to your sewing with Quilting Cuddle! Today, we are sharing our Slice ’n Dice quilt made with Quilting Cuddle and walking through our favorite tips for sewing with this low-pile plush fabric. If you have been curious about working with minky but were not sure where to start, this is a great project to try.

Our Slice ’n Dice Cuddle Quilt features the Nantucket Summer Quilting Cuddle Fat Quarter Bundle by Camille Roskelley for Moda Fabrics. This collection is expected in March, and we cannot wait to see these coastal blues stitched up in more cozy quilts.
Making Slice ’n Dice with Quilting Cuddle

Quilting Cuddle is soft, stable, and incredibly satisfying to sew. This low-pile, low-stretch plush fabric measures 43/44 inches wide and is made of 100 percent polyester. It offers the buttery softness you expect from minky, with added stability that makes it suitable for patchwork, quilting, and more.
Before you begin, we recommend watching our original Slice ’n Dice video tutorial. The construction method is the same, and this video will walk you through the cutting and piecing process step by step.
When working with Quilting Cuddle, start with an 18-inch square, just as shown in the video. From there, you will follow the same Slice ’n Dice method to create your quilt blocks.

Sewing Tips for Quilting Cuddle
Working with plush fabrics requires a few small adjustments to get the best results. Here’s what Kimberly recommends to help your project come together smoothly from start to finish.
- Preparation and Cutting
- Use a Schmetz Stretch Machine Needle, size 90/14
- Change your rotary blade before or after your project to ensure clean cuts
- Keep a Pink Mini Vacuum or handheld vacuum nearby while cutting and piecing to manage loose fibers
- Piecing and Sewing
- Pin every 2 inches to prevent shifting
- Standard pins work well, and Clover Wonder Clips are also a great option
- Use a walking foot to help feed layers evenly
- Increase your stitch length to 2.5 to 3.0
- Use a 1/2 inch seam allowance rather than a 1/4 inch seam allowance for better stability
- Binding
- For the chunky binding on this quilt, start by cutting your binding strips 3.5″ wide. Without folding the binding, sew it to the front of the quilt using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Then fold the free edge of the binding strip toward the center and whip stitch it down on the back of the quilt to finish.
- Pressing and Finishing
- Press on the back of the fabric only, as pressing on the front can damage the plush surface
- Clean your machine thoroughly when finished, since plush fibers can build up inside your machine
These simple adjustments make sewing with Quilting Cuddle smooth and enjoyable, even if it is your first time working with plush fabric.

This quilt has Cuddle on top, back, and binding. You can also flip the combination and use cotton for the quilt top, with Quilting Cuddle as the backing for an extra-cozy finish.

I wish some of this could be added to a sew sampler box just so we could sample it before making a large purchase.
