Sugar Plum Block Challenge

Whether it be at the Nutcracker or in a dessert, the sugar plum always brings the sweetness of the holidays with it! This holiday season, we are challenging you to make the Sugar Plum Block in our Sugar Plum Block Challenge featuring the Hazel & Plum collection by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda Fabrics! We have come together with Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts to bring you this challenge.

This iconic block blends colorful fabrics with a beautiful pattern! Here’s what the block looks like:

How to Participate

ANYONE is eligible to participate in this challenge! All you need is the free Sugar Plum Block pattern, some fabric and our Sugar Plum Block Video Tutorial and you’re ready to go! The challenge will run from today, November 2, 2017, to Friday, November 17, 2017. The block challenge will have you make the block and use it in a creative way, whether that be a wall hanging, table runner, garment bag, or something else of your choice!

You will need to have your block made and sewn into a project, photographed and uploaded to this Dropbox by noon (12PM) CST on Friday November 17 to be eligible to participate. The link will expire at 12PM CST on Friday November 17.

This will be a judged challenge. We will be looking for technique and creativity in the project when judging the projects. We will narrow it down to our top 7 choices and then let you decide which projects you like the best! The most important thing is to have fun and let your creativity shine through your project! Also, be sure to share your Sugar Plum Block Challenge projects on Instagram using the hashtag #SugarPlumBlockChallenge so we can see and share your work!

  1. Frankly, I would piece this block differently, so the yellow squares are each one square of fabric instead of four triangles. It would be easier and you wouldn’t have to worry about the seams matching up. You piece the block in a different order to do this, on the diagonal, no set-in seams or anything. Hard to explain in a comment box.
