Once again for quilters and stitchers Christmas is coming in July! This time it’s bringing a star, a Star of Wonder that is! The Star of Wonder Mystery Quilt will be revealed block by block over five weeks. Join Kimberly Jolly for a Christmas Mystery Quilt Along, as she shows you how to sew a new block each week! We won’t reveal the look of the quilt beforehand. That’s a secret.
Throughout July, we will release weekly quilt block video tutorials on our YouTube channel along with FREE quilt block and cross stitch patterns on the Star of Wonder Sew Along Supply Page.
We’ve shared some sneak peeks of the quilt, but the rest is a mystery! The Star of Wonder Quilt is a beautiful medallion quilt and finishes as a 48.5″ square. Ours is designed in the joyous Once Upon a Christmas collection by Sweetfire Road for Moda Fabrics. If you’re excited to sprinkle some holiday cheer into your quilting, grab your Star of Wonder Quilt Kit now! This kit includes fabric for the top and binding.
The Star of Wonder Cross Stitch measures 84w x 84h, finishing as a 6” square when stitched on 14 count Aida! If you’re working with a different cloth, you can use our free Cross Stitch Calculator to find your desired size.
The floss and cloth you choose are up to you, but we stitched ours with the Star of Wonder Classic Colorworks Thread Pack on White Chocolate 14 Count Aida by Wichelt. Some other seasonal supplies we’d recommend include the Festively Gift Wrapped Enamel Needle Minder, Enchanted Enamel Charm, and the Rose Mad for Plaid Project bag.
Join Star of Wonder!

Love FQS!
I have done the quilts the last two years! They are some of my favorites I hang for the holidays!
Question time: Would (2) layer cakes work in place of the fat quarters? I am mulling around which Christmas line to use. With the fabric requirements you have, will there be fabric leftover? Thirdly, with your secret design, could one easily add a row at the bottom and top of vertical flying geese to make this a big longer? If yes, I may just buy half yards.
4th question: Could Bella 9900-200 look okay for the background with Once Upon a Christmas?
Hi Lacey!
Moda recommends 9900-182 as the matching Bella background. 9900-200 may be a little light. Ultimately it’s up to you!
Hi Lacey! Great questions!
2 layer cakes is not recommended because it would be too scrappy and some of the pieces are too big. You would likely find yourself running out of fabric in that case.
With our fabric requirements, there will be a small amount of each SKU left. We give enough to starch, do straightening cuts and recut a smaller piece or two if needed.
Finally yes, the quilt could be made bigger by adding more borders.
Happy sewing! 🙂
Would it be possible to make this in a larger size? I’d like to join the quilt along but would prefer at least a lap size quilt. Thanks so much!
Hi Paula!
Great question, you could absolutely make the quilt bigger. The quilt could be made bigger by adding more borders!
My kit arrived today and with our temps in the triple digits, I am so ready to be sewing and thinking of a cooler time of year.
A border is being shown on the stitch along, will that be included in the pattern also?
Hi Diane!
Everything you see stitched in sneak peeks will be part of the pattern releases, yes! 🙂
I like the Fat Quarter Mystery SALs. Thanks for putting me onto this one too! Your Orange Peel blocks are very pretty and Cardinals Rule is making good progress!
I watched Kimberly on utube this morning and so enjoy her lives! I was hoping to hear when in July this Sal will stat but no mention of it. Any idea on that? Just trying to schedule time and be ready! Thanks!
Hi Deb! We’re sharing the first patterns tomorrow!
So excited-can’t wait! My kit with backing have arrived, so I’m ready❤️😊
Dear FQS: Thank you for this year’s SAL! I just bought my rose colored Mad for Plaid bag, my Star of Wonder needle minder and the floss. I am going to stitch my star on white 14 count Aida. I am looking forward to the Stitch-Along!
Always enjoy your mystery stitch alongs! Love the colors this year and can’t wait to get started. Thank you for sharing your talents.
