My 2025 Star Climber Scrap Quilt
For 2025, I will be using the FREE Star Climber Scrap Quilt for my scrap quilting challenge. Making a scrap quilt is not only a great way to make the most of your stash, it’s a great sentimental piece to have too! I love being able to look at all the different blocks and be reminded of all the quilts I made for family, friends, and with all of you during that year’s quilt alongs.
Star Climber Supplies
The finished quilt is available in two sizes, the Tabletopper, which finishes at 39.5″ x 39.5″, and the Lap, which finishes at 58.5″ x 58.5″. This year’s pattern is written for foundation paper piecing. Here are the supplies I’m grabbing to make mine:
- FREE Star Climber Scrap Quilt Downloadable PDF Pattern by Fat Quarter Shop
- Foundation Paper:
- For the Lap Quilt
- One pad of 6″ Woven Star Quilt Block Foundation Paper by It’s Sew Emma
- One pad of 6″ Courthouse Steps Quilt Block Foundation Paper by It’s Sew Emma
- For the Tabletopper
- One pad of 4″ Woven Star Quilt Block Foundation Paper by It’s Sew Emma
- One pad of 4″ Courthouse Steps Quilt Block Foundation Paper by It’s Sew Emma
- For the Lap Quilt
- Kimberly’s Foundation Paper Piecing Starter Kit
For the fabric, I’m starting off with the Background Bee Bundle and the Colors Bee Bundle, which are both fat quarter bundles from Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs. My stash of Lori fabrics is well stocked from previous projects and the Lori Holt Fat Quarter Club, so I will also be pulling some scraps from there to round it out!
In 2025, I’ll be sewing with the scraps from my other planned quilts and sew alongs throughout the year. I’ll share updates on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube Channel in my sewing progress livestreams as I go. I would love to see you join me in sewing up your scraps this year! I’ll share my progress on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #FQSStarClimberQuilt, and I hope you will, too!
Happy Quilting!

I am not a fan of foundation paper. Is this a quilt that is NON FP friendly? Thank you!
Woven star and courthouse step blocks can be pieced without foundation papers!
Ms Jan just try it. They are truly addicting those stars are amazing. I can’t stop making them and I have no goal!🤠I’m so excited for this new pattern. Star Climber. I was like you could not wrap my head around sore piecing. But these stars are so fun💕
I also am not a fan of foundation paper. Can this also be a normal pattern with measurements. I’d love to do it.
Our pattern is written for FPP only right now, but both of these blocks can be traditionally pieced!
Huge fan of foundation paper piecing. Knee deep in dragonfruit now. Great quilt idea
I am excited to try this. I actually have a pad of the court step block paper, but haven’t tried it yet.
Love love love this! Foundation paper piecing is so satisfying. Thank you so much for this free pattern.
Have printed off the instructions and scraps have plenty, but would rather not go the foundation paper, so would there be instructions for the blocks without the paper foundation way? Thank you
Yup, I have printed the fabric requirements also and have a collection picked out, but, I will respectfully opt out if it requires foundation paper. I also inquired in stitch squad FB and have not yet received a reply from a FQS staff. I hope they are enjoying the holidays. I am certain those of us who have inquired will hear something later this week. LOVE FQS and appreciate their graciousness in all they do for the quilting community
Courthouse steps is a tradtional block pattern you could easily find on the internet in a variety of piecing methods. The most basic is where each piece is cut exactly the correct size. There are also rulers that enable you to make the block with slightly wider strips and each Round is trimmed to the exact size.
Woven Star is another traditional pattern that could be found with simple internet searches. The ones that aren’t foundation paper pieced are made with a lot of triangles and would be “chopped up looking” and not from a single piece of fabric for each print.
I can’t fathom why some people expect a business to provide multiple versions of a FREE PATTERN. Do the work yourself!
Thank you Candice for supplying this info. I was thinking the same thing when I was reading the above comments. The internet is full of information, people need to use it!!!
Candace,
Thank ypu so much for your informative reply. Just to clarify, I am one of those persons who inquired about not using FP, and was NOT implying FQS should provide another pattern that would be FP free…(as your post implies),but rather to inquire how the quilt might look (choppy, also as your reply mentioned) without the use of FP. I absolutely appreciate FQS for ALL their team does and would never i.pose my needs upon others. I feel like your “do your own work” comment was unnecessary!
If I knew how to edit my comments, I would delete the snarky part. I had not read your Facebook post at the time and I inferred incorrectly that your were one of those people that expected a business to provide instructions in your preferred method. But I have seen your posts now and Peach’s response so I do sincerely apologize to you.
I am so intimidated by paper piecing but have always wanted to try it! This quilt is just the inspiration for me to finally learn this technique! Thank you
I LOVE foundation paper piecing! Although I could make these blocks with traditional methods, I love the accuracy of FPP.
What a great way to start the year off with this great project. Thank you FQS for the inspiration
What skill level would you consider this quilt? Thank you
The courthouse steps blocks can be completed easily without foundation paper. If you are worried about the look or the difficulty level of the traditionally pieced woven Star blocks, you could make a few test blocks. If they don’t work for you, I think you could substitute another 6-inch star such as a sawtooth star or an Ohio star. I bet even a simple pinwheel block would look cool.
Thanks for the free pattern. Very excited about this as I have a lot of Lori Holt scraps. I have already started cutting and the papers are supposed to arrive in two days. I’m usually a hand piecer but like to have a machine project to work on occasionally.
