QuiltCon 2024 Highlights

Where would we be without quilting? At QuiltCon 2024, held in Raleigh, North Carolina, last month, quilters from near and far gathered to share in our love of quilts! A few of us got to visit, so come take a look with us!

I’m Kate from the Marketing team, and I was lucky enough to go on this quilty adventure with my coworker Angel from the It’s Sew Emma team. The show was amazing, and there was so much to see!

With quilters from all over in attendance, seeing our quilty friends in real life (instead of Instagram) was one of the big highlights. And QuiltCon also gave people a chance to visit and learn through lectures, workshops, and networking events.

One of the main attractions of QuiltCon was the stunning array of quilts on display which ran the full spectrum from minimalist compositions to bold quilts full of color and intricate piecing. It wasn’t possible to capture even a fraction of the amazing quilts, but these are some that caught my eye.

Cole Whitaker’s quilt, Joy, took 2nd place in the piecing category, and you can see why! You can find him at @colesquilts.

The beautiful quilting on Hexibore by Jenny Haynes (@pappersaxsten) is mesmerizing!

This playful quilt calls for flash photography to see the full scene with metallic thread details. It’s a Trap! was made by Melissa de Leon Mason (@quiltallthethings_).

The vendors had plenty of exciting offerings to see, too!

At the Moda Fabrics booth, we stopped by to see the amazing Dolly Quilt made of tiny half-inch squares and visit with their talented creative team.

Beautiful quilts adorned the Riley Blake Designs booth, and we said Hello to designers Christopher Thompson and Minki Kim.

The BloomBerry Zipper Pouch Panel by Minki Kim makes the cutest little projects a cinch.

Hand quilting was, pardon the pun, a common thread in many of the quilts, highlighting the handiwork and attention to detail in many of the quilts. That’s why I was excited to see some new hand-quilting threads on display.

Suzy Quilts shared her new thread box perfect for hand quilting, the 8wt Evolve Collection Aurifil Thread Box. The set of 20 thread colors was inspired by her Signature Pure Solids Fat Quarter Bundle, and in that rainbow of warm and cool hues, it would go with so many fabrics. Suzy’s Evolve wall hanging, seen on the right, showed the beautiful colors and stitch definition of the 8wt threads.

Aurifil showed this eye-popping selection of Color Builders. The threads are the foundation of the new Aurifil Palazzo Block of the Month. Set to launch in April 2024, it will showcase an exclusive monthly Foundation Paper Piecing quilt block pattern for The Palazzo Quilt designed by Kitty Wilkin of Night Quilter, along with a monthly 3-spool set of matching 50wt Aurifil Thread.

Beyond the workshops and exhibitions, QuiltCon fostered a sense of belonging and togetherness that is at the heart of the quilting community. The creative energy was immense, and we all went home with an extra dose of inspiration. Thanks to the Modern Quilt Guild, and to all the designers, quilters and volunteers who made it an unforgettable time!
