Making a Cozy Quilt with Pat Sloan’s Fabric

“Begin each day with a grateful heart.” The advice printed on the selvage of Pat Sloan’s latest collection, Gratitude and Grace, is a beautiful reminder befitting the cheerful colors and prints. In celebration of the Gratitude and Grace fabric tour, we have a quilt to share and a special giveaway, too! Read on to find out more.

My name is Kate, and I’m part of the marketing team at Fat Quarter Shop. I’m excited to show you the Sunbeams Quilt that I made with this cute collection by Pat Sloan for Benartex fabrics.

The Sunbeams Quilt

I knew that the Sunbeams Quilt by It’s Sew Emma would show off the fabrics nicely because it has large squares and simple blocks. The pattern is fat quarter-friendly with a scrappy layout, so I placed the fabric randomly, spreading out the prints and colors.

The quilt pattern gives instructions for traditional piecing, but I used Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper to make the half square triangles. I like how perfectly they always turn out.

The Sunbeams Quilt comes in four sizes, and I made the Lap size that measures 48.5″ x 60.5″.

For the backing fabric, the Midnight Blue Cuddle is soooo soft, and just look at the quilting on the plush fabric. Wow! I know my dogs will agree that Cuddle makes such a cozy quilt. After all, they zero in on the comfiest spots in the house, and if you have pets you probably know what I’m talking about.

I love picking out pantographs to go with my quilts, and on this one, I was inspired by a few of the swirly prints in Gratitude and Grace to choose a quilting design with feathers and large swirls. I sent my quilt to Kustom Kwilts for her “spa day” (a phrase I learned from Pat. Ha!) and was so pleased to see how it turned out.

For the finishing touch, I embroidered my name and year with the alphabet on my sewing machine. I went with a light thread color and attached this extra block to the back of the quilt. I like how it turned out and will definitely use this method for quilt labels again.

Reflecting on gratitude and grace, I love making quilts. I enjoy the whole process, but especially playing with fabric, color, and design. I also enjoy gifting quilts to friends and family. I’m very grateful to work in the quilting field, which is chock-full of lovely people. And lovely quilts, too.
