Kimberly’s Hearth & Home Scrap Quilt

Scrappy quilts are a favorite of mine because I get to showcase several of my favorite fabric collections in one cute quilt! After finishing two scrap quilts that used super small pieces and took almost three years to complete, I wanted a scrappy quilt that used bigger pieces of fabric, had bigger blocks, and would be done a lot quicker. Lori Holt is the queen of scrappy patterns, and I fell in love with the scrap-friendly Hearth & Home quilt while we were shooting the photos for her most recent quilt book, Prairie Home. Keep reading to learn all about how I’m making my scrappy version of this quilt and how you can too!

How I Pick Which Collections to Use

Each Hearth & Home block uses a total of 23 fabrics, which is the perfect amount to make a scrappy block from each collection. When I’m picking which collections to use, I’m looking for ones that have at least 23 different SKUs, and I want there to be a nice variety of colors. A collection with too few colors would probably stand out too much in a quilt like this, so while I love classic red, white, and blue patriotic collections, for example, I probably won’t use them for this quilt.

Another thing to consider is how many low-volume fabrics there are. When I’m cutting the pieces for my blocks, I like to use as few low-volume fabrics as possible, so the more prints in a collection, the better!

Supplies

The biggest piece in this block is 10.5″ x 2.5″, so it’s not layer cake-friendly. The smallest size precut that you can use is a fat-eighth. Here is a list of the supplies I’ve gathered for mine so far:

Block Details

If you’re a regular viewer of our Friday Livestreams over on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube channel, you might have caught me talking all about these blocks in the June Quilt Along Progress Livestream and the July Quilt Along Progress Livestream. For easy reference, I’ve compiled all the block details from the Livestreams for you here!

  • Hearth & Home Block Pattern:
  • Fabric Placement:
    • 20 different fabrics are used for the outside strips
      • I do have to use a bit of low-volume fabric for the strips so that I can get enough different fabrics for each block
    • The background fabric is the same throughout (On the Farm Cream Spots & Dots Yardage – 20708-36)
    • The stars in the middle use three SKUs that are all the same color
      • I pick a different color for the star in each block for a scrappier feel
  • Pressing:
    • I press all my seams open
  • Finishing:
    • I don’t plan on doing a border right now, but I reserve the right to change my mind down the road.
    • I’ll make a total of 12 blocks for a finished size of 60.5″ x 80.5″
