Flashback Friday: Neat Stripes

Barbara Brackman talks about one of our favorite, timeless prints on today’s session of Flashback Friday!

Neat Stripes

Stripes are a classic print with a lot of variety. Small, simple stripes were often referred to as “Neat Stripes” a century or more ago.
Cactus Flower block, about 1850. Two stripes better than one.

A neat stripe can be the background or the featured fabric, depending on its personality.
Portrait from about 1880.
Neat stripes were quite the fashion for quilts and clothing after the Civil War, up into the 20th century.
Quilt from about 1880 in madder-style stripes.

You know how careful we all are at matching stripes? If you’re going for a period look, don’t worry so much!
