Christmas in July Block-A-Thon - The Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog

Christmas in July Block-A-Thon

Hey everyone!

Today’s the day that our block is featured on the FreeSpirit blog for the Christmas in July Block-a-thon! If you haven’t heard of it, several of us bloggers were sent some mystery fabrics by Free Spirit to create blocks of all different sizes for a totally new kind of Christmas quilt.

For fabric requirements for this quilt-along, look here. To make it exactly as the bloggers have, you will need a few fat quarters or about 1/2 yard of the fabrics, or of course you can use whatever fabrics you have in your stash!

The tutorials for each block are posted on the FreeSpirit site, and today is the day for Block 11, my Delight block! Finishing at 6″, this sweet little thing was made with two Grand Hotel fabrics and a white solid. Truth be told, I didn’t know how these two would look combined, but I love how it turned out.

You can download the tutorial here and go visit Free Spirit for all the past blocks! Only a few more to go before they reveal the finished quilt. Here’s the schedule for the final blocks:

July 27th – Lee at Freshly Pieced
July 30th – Jennifer at MJ and Co
August 1st – Mishka at Quilting Gallery
August 3rd – Tiffiny at Free Patchwork Quilt Info
August 6th – Tacha at Fat Quarterly
August 8th – Megan at Canoe Ridge Creations
August 10th – Jocelyn at It’s Sew Emma
August 13th – Final Quilt Reveal!

Last but not least, Free Spirit has donated a Chicopee charm pack for us to give away! Comment here with prints you would use for Delight, and we will choose a winner at random and announce the winner on Monday, 7/30!

Then come on back on Friday, 8/10, to see Jocelyn’s block for Christmas in July, the very last block before the quilt reveal.

  1. I might use Winterkist for this block – love the non-traditional colors on that Christmas-y fabric! Thanks for the chance to win the Chicopee charm pack.

  2. The rich colors of Joel Dewberry's Heirloom may look good in this block, paired with some Kaffe shot cottons — like burgundy, green/turquoise, blue jewel tones

  3. Hmm… I think a walk in the woods' blue bird would look nice there:)

  4. I would use Peace in Holly for the diamond shapes and Tannenbaum in Wintermint for the cross – both from the Joy line. Cute block!

  5. I think Delight in Cherry Christmas prints would look cute. Although it would actually look good in two of Chicopee prints, too.

  6. I'd use some Valori Wells wrenly Christmas prints…not sure which ones, but the rosettes for sure!

  7. I would have to use Cherry Christmas by Aneela Hoey as its always Summer in Oz at Christmas time and her aquas and fresh clear colours are just perfect!

  8. Lovely block! i already know what colours i will use! This Qal has been lots of fun and i cant wait to see your block in the flickr group!

  9. I would make Delight using: Fabric A in either white or off white; Fabric B in the orange plaid of Chicopee; Fabric C&D in the charcoal and white check. Fun hop; thanks.

  10. I think I would use … Basic Grey – Fruit Cake – since I'm in love with it!! 🙂 And I think it would make a pretty neat looking square/quilt!

  11. I"m think Madrona Road by Violet Craft would be great for this block. Know it's not Christmas fabric but think it would look fabulous!

  12. I would definitely use my scraps. I am addicted to scrap quilts right now! I would use a moda solid for the background to create uniformity!

  13. I'd use either Tula Pink – The Birds and the Bees or Cloud 9 – Simpatico. I'm in love with both collections.

  14. Your block turned out great and your fabrics all look super together. I might use some Joy if I made this block.

Thank you and Free Spirit for a great giveaway and a chance to win some lovely fabric.

  16. I am confused. After reading some of the comments I thought i was trying for a Denyse Schmidt charm pack. If I win I will make something fun. Thanks for a chance.

  17. I would try it in Chicopee, that is one of the lines I'm most excited about this year! Thanks for the change to win.

  18. Love this block! I think I'd use a mix of Hope Valley & Flea Market Fancy to make it less Christmas-y. Thanks for the chance to win.
