Book of the Month December 2013: Quilts Made with Love + Giveaway - The Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog

Book of the Month December 2013: Quilts Made with Love + Giveaway

It’s time again for a new Book of the Month! Rachel Griffith of PS I Quilt is here today to tell you a little bit about our December Book of the Month, Quilts Made with Love. We have a special video from Quilt Market, a bunch of photos, and a big giveaway, so sit right down and let’s get started! And don’t forget, the Book of the Month is 20% off all month!

To start this off, we wanted to bring you right back to Quilt Market, where Quilts Made with Love made it’s debut. Watch this video of Rachel’s Schoolhouse presentation and get a closer look at the quilts in the book before we dive in.

I’m so very excited to talk to y’all about my first book, Quilts Made with Love.
We’ve all experienced life events.
These events, good or bad, make up our lives.
Think about all the events that have happened in or around your life within the last year.
Your friend expecting her first baby, your cousin getting married, your neighbor passing away, or your grandson receiving orders for deployment.
I’m willing to bet, you can personally relate to one, if not more, of these occasions.

Sweet Cheeks

My inspiration for Quilts Made with Love came from the all-occasion greeting card boxes that my grandmothers like to have on hand. Your grandmother had boxes of those things, right?
Thought so. 😉

It Takes Two
Turnaround

As a quilter, I wanted to be able to open a book and pick the appropriate quilt for whatever situation I was faced with—just as my grandmothers would choose a card from the assortment.
The occasions featured in Quilts Made with Love cover everything from birth to loss. (The non-holiday events.)
Need a quilt for a retirement gift? It’s there.
Need a quilt for a sick parent? It’s there, too.
And there are many more.

Embrace

The quilts in my book are accessible to quilters of all ages, and will appeal to both the modern and traditional quilter. I pride myself on being a nowadays quilter. (Someone that mixes traditional and modern.)

Around the Block

So, whether this is your first quilt book or your 100th, I hope it will become instantly usable. I can’t wait for y’all to hold it your hands and make quilts that celebrate and provide comfort to your friends and your family.

To celebrate the December 2013 Book of the Month, we are giving away 5 copies of Quilts Made with Love and an Around the Block Quilt Kit here on the Jolly Jabber! Just comment below letting us know what non-holiday occasion you often make quilts for. Six winners will be chosen Monday 12/9/13! Good luck!

UPDATE! Tanyia, Leslie at the Sugarhouse, Sheila, Michele, Nancy, and Marija are our lucky winners! Thank you all for playing!

  1. I make more baby quilts than anything, I love to present a new mama a handmade quilt when her new little one arrives!

  2. Make them for just about anything I feel a need to make it (birthday, weddings, just because…) but the top one would be NEW BABIES!!! Love, love, love making quilts for babies and kids, anyone I know gets one, if I can possibly manage (sometimes is a bit lat but still there!)
I am super excited to start making some VERY special quilts soon – for our FIRST GRANDCHILD!!!! (coming in May) HOOORAY!!!
Loved video and reading about this new book – Thanks for a great giveaway!

  6. Weddings and babies seem to be high on my list lately. I also love to make birthday quilts because people never expect to receive such a lovely gift for their birthday.

  7. My very first quilt -I'm only on my 2nd one now:) – was made for my grandson. I personally think he's a super occasion just because he's awesome, but I guess the rest of the world may not feel that way, lol.

  8. I make baby quilts often for family and friends, and throw quilts for birthdays and weddings … so they get FINISHED !!

  12. I make quilts when a pattern or fabric strikes me, not really for an occasion. I have given a quilt for a bday present, and I am planning a baby quilt.

  13. I am just getting into quilting this year. I used to knit blankets for friends having babies, but I can't wait to make quilts now! One of my husband's best friends is getting married next year. I cannot wait to make them a quilt to celebrate their life together. Thanks for the opportunity!!

  14. I often make quilts for babies or weddings, but really I don't need much of an excuse and sometimes make and give quilts for no reason. Not long ago I made and gave a "no reason" lap quilt to a dear lady who taught my son at preschool nearly 20 years ago. She was absolutely thrilled that I would make a quilt for her and has thanked me profusely every time I've seen her since. And though it apparently made her very happy, it made me even HAPPIER!

  15. Baby quilts! and "special birthday" quilts. I also made a "thank you" quilt for a friend when we stayed with them for a while. Thanks for the chance. Linda

  16. New babies, and for the past couple of years for the beginning of winter I make one each for my two children to take when we have services..it can be quite cold even when the heaters are on in the building.

  17. I make quilts for my local quilt guild for charity events. The quilt is usually a group effort and then I volunteer to longarm them for the group. I also do a lot of charity quilts throughout the year.

  18. I make most of my quilts as gifts for new babies and birthdays! Sometimes I just make a quilt because I see a sample that I love and just have to make it, too! Thanks for the chance to win. Brenda

  19. I am in the process of making a quilt for all those friends I have treasures for all these years as how much I appreciate their wonderful friendship and their faith in me. Also, to family. They will get it sometimes this week/months/year. I love making quilt, with someone I love in mind.

  20. I've only made quilts for birthdays or "just because". Have never made one for a specific holiday such as Christmas. Jan

  21. I make lap quilts for birthdays. I have ten grands, those I'm doing this year. Next year will be all the parents, and the year after the grand parents, etc.
lap quilts are quick and I strive to put favorite colors or themes in them like Superman, legos, etc.

    Thanks for the chance.

  22. Like many of the other quilters who have commented here, my number one occasion for making quilts is for new babies!

  23. I can't wait to have the opportunity to do a baby quilt, but my niece and nephew don't seem to be in any hurry. For now I'll settle for making "I Love You" quilts. Just because I love them and I love to quilt.

  24. I make quilts for the births of my great nieces & nephews. And I've made quilts as going away gifts too. Thanks for the chance tow in.

  25. Wonderful giveaway!! I make quilts for Project Linus and Quilts for Kids… great charities and a great use of my fabric stash. Thanks so much!

  26. I like making birthday quilts (both for newborns and for us more "established" folks). Making quilts just because I like someone is fun too! 🙂

  27. Baby quilts and wedding quilts seem to be the most abundant non-holiday quilt projects I have made. I sometimes have made quilted items to commemorate a graduation or what not. Thanks for the chance to win!

  28. Our guild makes Just 4 You quilts for the children in the children's hospital. All year long we work on baby quilts and even some for young teens. Thank you for reviewing Rachel's book.

  30. I make quilts for birthdays. In addition, if I see a quilt pattern and set of colors that makes me think of a particular someone, I'll make the quilt "just because".

  31. Lately I've been making wedding quilts of the throw variety, not the heirloom kind, then baby quilts, grandkid quilts and donation quilts. I seldom make a specific holiday quilt actually. Thanks.

  32. Most of the gift quilts I have made were for high school graduations. There is a reminder of home as they go off to college or other adventures.

  33. I've made quilts for babies and young children. I would love to make one for a special anniversary … which I just thought of 🙂 Thank you for the chance to win.

  34. Who needs an excuse. Since starting quilting I make them "just because. Finished a"Big Brother" quilt last night and the new "Baby Brother" was born today. Snuggle quilts for all the neices and nephews – made with lots of love…. then there are the receiving blanks as they are so much nicer than those that are mass produced. I have several quilts made with love by my own grandmother and although she is no longer here, they bring back memories. Some I can look at and recall the outfit she cut the material from.

  35. Birthdays and baby quilts and just because. Once I get my "just because" quilts all quilted I will give them to a group of ladies who take them to hospitals, etc.

  36. As only relatively new to quilting – all my current quilts have been for milestone birthdays. With my last completed quilt being for my sister's 21st! I am yet to make one for myself!

  37. I love making quilts for babies. I am looking forward to making a gender specific quilt for our first grandchild expected the first week of January.

  38. I have only finished two quilts. One was a crib quilt for my granddaughter. The first one I've kept. My next one will be a lap quilt for my cousin. The occasion for that one would be "Just Because", the best kind!

  39. Graduations …… I usually have a large piece of white or off white fabric available for everyone at the graduation party to sign with their congratulation messages and good luck wishes for the new grad. This then becomes part of the back of the quilt .

  40. The only non-holiday I do not make a quilt for is Graduations. I have been too busy making other items for Graduations, but was notified that 2 of my Great Nieces did want a quilt for Graduation, with their college colors included.

  41. Quilts for new babies and "just because" throws that don't take as long. This book should add new inspiration.

  42. most often I make quilts for sick children at a local hospital. I also do them for babies and weddings if I have time, and fabric that is perfect, and I REALLY like the person.

  43. I just made my first quilt for my daughters college graduation gift. I am so addicted I then immediately made another one for my new first granddaughter

  78. My occasion for quilting, is the need from within – I quilt because I love how my mind and body feel making a quilt, I figure out a way to gift it, later. 🙂

  79. Holiday? I make quilts just because I love making quilts! Sometimes they are given on a holiday (Christmas, birthday), but more often than not it's an "unbirthday" gift.

  95. I like making gifts for new babies or toddler birthdays. I made a quilt for my great niece for her 2nd birthday and didn't expect that she would really care since it wasn't a toy. But she delighted me. She spread it on the carpet immediately and layed down on it calling it her blankie and then was enamored with wrapping her baby doll in it.

  96. I am a newbie quilter! I have been learning by working on simple quilts with charity groups like Tulsa Quilts for Kids which distributes quilts to children in distress whether from illness, domestic abuse, natural disasters, etc. Also with a previous church, quilts for veterans. Blocks are being marked with the quarter inch seam allowance line, then a week prior to the wedding I will start ironing the blocks onto freezer paper (thanks FQS for that tip *big smile*). So, This is going to be their wedding quilt. Also birthdays if I can meet the deadline, but they usually end up as Christmas gifts, LOL. Thanks for a chance at this super quilting treasure. Hugs…

    reillyr2(at)hotmail(dot)com

  119. When someone has a difficult illness they are going through, I love to make them a "comfort" quilt. I've done several, and they are always so well received. It is a gratifying gift to make and give.

  129. I don't have a favorite occasion: I just make them as the occasion presents itself, such as a birthday, graduation, or valentines day, but most often, just because I love the pattern!!

  130. For the past 2 years I've made full sized quilts for all of my kids' teachers. It is a huge job but it is so important to me to thank them properly for all they do for our kids. A gift card just won't do and I know that they will remember my kids for years to come and they will always know just how special they are.

  131. I make wedding quilts for all our kids (7) – 2 are married and have their quilts, 1 is getting married in 2014 so hers is in the quilting stage, 1 is made and waiting for her to finish college, start her career and find a guy, 2 have materials collected and the pattern picked out and one I haven't even started to find materials!
