We are sew thrilled to present the 2020 Designer Mystery Block of the Month! This has been one of our favorite projects for the past 12 years! This will be the 13th annual Designer Mystery Quilt and it might just be our favorite one yet. This year’s quilt is blooming with mystery and intrigue as each block is made in Bloomington by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics, but the blocks’ designs are a secret!
Can you guess how the rest of it will look? Here’s a portion we can show you! This year’s quilt finishes at a generous 70.5″ x 70.5″. Fabric and patterns for blocks one through twelve will be mailed to you around the 10th of each month.
Every year, the Designer Mystery quilt is made up of 12 blocks designed by 12 Moda designers and each block measures 12″ x 12″. The great thing about the quilt is that it is perfect for quilters of all levels, so everyone is invited!
This year’s quilt will use fabrics from Bloomington by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics!
Designer Mystery Block of the Month
Ready for a monthly surprise? When you sign up for the Designer Mystery Block of the Month you’ll receive a shipment of the fabrics and pattern needed to make one block a month for 12 months. In the image below, you can see the spaces your monthly Block of the Month club will fill in (Blocks 1-12). The club will ship on the 10th of each month starting in June. Please note the spots are all sold out. We don’t have a wait list, but please contact us in mid-August to see if any spots have opened up if you’re interested in those (updated 5/14/2020).
What You’ll Need
The 2020 Designer Mystery Quilt is exclusive to the Fat Quarter Shop and you won’t find it anywhere else! To complete your quilt, pick up the Designer Mystery Finishing Kit, which also comes loaded with exclusive bonuses, to make the diamond setting seen above. It includes the pattern and fabric for the accents, sashing, borders, and binding. Reserve the Backing Set to receive 4.5 yards of these lovely blooms with your first shipment of the Block of the Month. It comes with a custom label only available in the Backing Set.(Please note these items are all sold out. Updated 5/31/2020).

Finishing Your Quilt
After sewing up your blocks that comprise the main part of the quilt, you will need additional fabric to complete the center block, corners, borders, binding and backing. These fabrics are in the Finishing Kit, but if you don’t have one, you may use the Fabric Requirements below to know which fabrics from the Bloomington collection you’ll need to make your quilt like the pattern.

We’re providing the fabric requirements for the blocks for those who didn’t get a spot in the Block of the Month club. The block patterns will be released in July of 2021.

These BOM’s have been so much fun for me. I have always enjoyed them and the fabric collections they are made from. Wonderful choices always! The Fat Quarter Shop team does the best job with them.
Is the $4.95 membership fee a one time fee or a monthly fee on top of the monthly block cost? How much is shipping for the monthly block? Like what is total cost to complete a quilt this way?
I looked at the links under each photo and scrolled down to the product detail. There is the $4.99 membership fee. The blocks for the US are $15.99 a month including shipping. The backing is $48.49 and the finishing kit is $77.47. I’m definitely thinking about it.
Hi, Christine, The membership fee is a one-time fee! After that, the monthly fee for the blocks and all their supplies is all you will be charged. It includes shipping!
