2014 Designer Mystery Block of the Month Blog Tour - The Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog

2014 Designer Mystery Block of the Month Blog Tour

Hello quilters, and welcome to the Designer Mystery Block of the Month Blog Tour! This is our third post and final of the tour. We hope you enjoyed getting a sneak peek at the magical 2014 Designer Mystery Block of the Month star quilt. Today we will be sharing some more STAR stories from our favorite designers and giving away more FQS cash, so keep reading and be sure to hop around!

This year we are all about stars. Star blocks, star designers, and the stars in our lives. We decided to get a little personal and asked each of our 12 designers to name their star block after someone in their life that shines brightly, like a star. Since we can not show you the star blocks, it is a mystery after all, each designer will be sharing a little something about the special star their block is named after.

Hop over to the Bunny Hill Designs, Me & My Sister Designs, Fig Tree Quilts, and Kansas Troubles Quilters blogs today to read all about their star. Afterwards, head back here and comment on this post for a chance to win a $75 Fat Quarter Shop gift certificate! All you have to do is list the three designer block names and tell us who you would dedicate your Designer Mystery Block of the Month quilt to for a chance to win!

The winner will be announced right here next Friday with a little recap of our blog hop. We hope you enjoyed learning about our designer’s shining stars!

Schedule
3/7/14: Laundry Basket Quilts, Pieces from My Heart, Sweetwater and Bonnie & Camille
3/14/14: Minick & Simpson, V & Co., and Kate Spain
3/21/14: Kansas Troubles Quilters, Bunny Hill Designs, Me & My Sister Designs, and Fig Tree Quilts

And now to announce last week‘s giveaway winner! Blogger Teri Taylor is our lucky winner, receiving a $75 gift certificate to Fat Quarter Shop.

Blogger Teri Taylor said…
The star in my life is my terminally ill grandson, Charleston, who is 4 years old. We almost lost him this weekend, but he pulled through. But someday he won’t. I am going to make this quilt for him, so he can always feel my love around him. Each stitch will have my love in it. I think I’ll call it “Prince Charleston.” He will always be in my heart.

Joyful Julie, Brilliant Lissa, Honorable Jake.

I will name my star after my father William. My father was my hero and he would always spend time talking to us. That's not unique but what I remember as a child is that my father listened, he really listened to what you said and would give you advice and ask questions. He made me feel important and made me feel like what I talked about mattered. My father died when I was eleven so I cherish those memories!

Sister Mary (me and My Sister Designs)

I would dedicate my block to "Dear Bill", my husband of 25 years, my rock and my soulmate. He deserves so much more, but I believe a quilt block in his name would make him smile, as we explore new quilt shops together for another 25 years at least!

Every summer he would take off from his job, he owned several gas stations and body shop he was a fantastic mechanic and body man. as a family he planned the most extraordinary and adventurous trips all over the us.
We did this till I went off to college. I am so glad i have so many wonderful memories of my dad that he has left me with I am very blessed in that respect thanks for the chance to win

  12. The names I collected are Susshine Lily, Sister Mary, and Dear Robert – all very great stories. I would name my block SIR MARTYN for my wonderful husband and who is also my care giver … I have been sick for 2-1/2 years and he has been there encouraging me and taking care of all my needs and desires. He never complains about it, and continues to try to do everything he used to. He's taken up quilting with me for a hobby when he retires, hopefully soon on disability, as he's in a lot of pain daily. He would love to win this as blue is his favorite color.

What wonderful stories. What a special quilt it will be. My star is my husband. Thru thick and thin,, heartbreaks and joys, tears of happiness and sadness,,in sickness ,and getting old together, we are together no matter what.

  106. Dear Robert, Sister Mary, Dear Marysia and Sunshine Lily … and a late post from Primitive Gatherings with Fast Eddie (my Dad's name, too!). This week my own star is one of my cats, Jet, who had surgery this past week, reached around the cone of shame to remove his own stitches, got put back together again and got a bigger cone of shame, and is still a loving sweet and affectionate (if frustrated) boy, despite all the other cats now hissing at him. I wouldn't be anywhere near that sweet!!

  107. I would dedicate my quilt block to my mother's Aunt Cora. I don't remember much about Aunt Cora, as these memories date back to the 1960's, but I do remember visiting her house for a Sunday family dinner, and seeing her quilt frame set up in her living room. As I recall, it took up almost the entire room, and made such an impression on me! Once I retired from teaching, I was able to take up quilting, but I do all my sewing by machine. I wonder if I'll ever use a quilt frame like Aunt Cora did.? . I would name my block Cora's Dream.

  110. Dear Robert, Sunshine Lily and Sister Mary are the 3 stars that were blogged about.

I would dedicate my quilt to my Mom. She was alway encouraging me and my sister to sew. We grew up on a farm 40 miles from town and once a month (especially in the summer) we would plan a shopping trip. My mom would drop us girls off at the fabric store and tell us to pick out a project while she did grocery shopping. Some of the projects we would come up were too ambious (prom dresses, curtain, bedspreads) but Mom was never discouraging she was always up for a challenge.

  111. My quilt will be dedicated to my Mom, who taught me to sew and who is a star in heaven now (living with me during my teenage years earned her spot)
The block names are Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary and Dear Robert

  112. Sister Mary, Sunshine Lily and Dear Robert.
I would name my star after my Dad's Mom. Delia was her name. I got my love of flowers and quilting from her. She passed away when I was about 10 so I didn't get to enjoy her long enough.

  113. Sister Mary, Sunshine Lily and Dear Robert.

  118. I love all the block! Stars are my favorite, so it is too hard to choose. Joanna at Fig tree's story touched me the most. My grandmother was the guiding star in my life and I loved her so much. She is responsible for me being the person I am today (I hope I have made her proud). So i would name my block after her. Inez's star!

  119. My block would be named Sweet Patrick. My husband is the most supportive person I have ever met. He takes care of his grandmother and helps me whenever I need something. He always makes sure I get the emotional support I need, no matter what he has going on.

  120. The star block design names are Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary, Dear Robert and Dear Marysia.

Quilting for 20 years now, I haven't made him his very own quilt yet, although I've often thought I should! Thank you for the chance to win!

  123. Dear Marysia, Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary, and Dear Robert. I would dedicate my block to my mother-in-law who got me started quilting and still answers all my random questions patiently.

  124. What sweet stories!! Dear Marysia, Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert, and Sister Mary were the block names. I'm sure like most people, having to choose one "star" was not easy. I could have chosen my husband, my mom, my grand children, I treasure each of them! In the end, I chose my 3 children! They have brought me such joy and in spite of my many motherhood mistakes they still claim me as their mother!! And, without them I would not have grandchildren!! Thank you for these stories as it caused me to stop and write a love letter to my three "stars"!!

  125. 1.Sunshine Lily
    2. Dear Robert
    3. Sister Mary

  129. I would dedicate this quilt to my mom. Cancer took her almost 10 years ago. She took up quilting in her retirement and tried and tried to get me into it with her. But I just couldn't find the time. Now I am retired and she is gone. So I took up quilting and feel her spirit with me as I work using the many tools she left me.

Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert Sister Mary and Dear Marysia,

  130. Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert, Sister Mary and Dear Marysia.

  131. The Stars are:
    1. Sunshine Lily
    2. Dear Robert
    3. Sister Mary
    4. Dear Marysia

I'd dedicate a star to my grandmother, who just passed away after a long and charitable life. She wasn't much of a quilter, but she was very creative and knew when to care about detail, and when to cut the chaff. Her favorite pattern was Sunbonnet Sue; she even made a pattern for a pillow for her neighbor (a friend for 60 years) of a Sue with a lawn mower! She sure would have loved these blues…..

  132. Dear Robert, Sunshine Lily, Sweet Mary, and Babicia or Dear Marysia

The first time I saw this year's mystery, I immediately thought of my friend, Kathy. Not only because she loves blue, but the quilt colors are so soft and lovely. She is probably the most Godly woman I have ever known, sweet, loyal, faithful, always with encouragement and love. I am so lucky to have her for a friend. When I think of heaven it is always twinkling bright stars and I know that when we are there she will still be the brightest one. My quilt would be dedicated to her…

  133. What great stories! The block names are Sunshine Lilly, Dear Robert, Sister Mary, and Dear Marysia.

I would dedicate my quilt to my mother and name it Gracious Gerry. There was nothing my mom couldn't do, and she was always willing to help me with a project. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss her sweet smile and generous spirit.

  134. Sister Mary, Dear Robert, Sunshine Lily, marysia. My star is my husband who managed our money all through our child rearing years so that we can be empty nesters enjoying retirement.

  135. Block names:
    Sister Mary
    Sunshine Lily
    Dear Robert
    Dear Marysia

I would name a block "Sisters" in honor of my four sisters.

  136. Lisa Bongean asked us for a favorite memory of our dad. My dad's name is Bob. One of my favorite memories is how much my dad loved listening to polka music. He also self taught himself to play my mom's accordion and would play polka music along with the record player. My dad would grab one of us kids and start polka dancing us around the front room and into the dining room, around the table and back into the front room again. We each waited our turn to have a spin around the house. We were all laughing so hard by the time our turn was done. This memory always brings a smile to my face.

She recently got married, and moved across the country because her husband is in the Navy. She is adventurous, hard-working, and a take-charge kind of gal with a positive attitude. Amy is a star!

  138. "Sunshine Lily" – Bunny Hill Designs
"Sister Mary" – Me and My Sister Designs
    "Dear Marysia" – Fresh Figs
"Dear Robert" – Kansas Troubles Quilter

My star would be my best friend Jan who has never let me down, always has my back and loves me like a sister.

  139. I can't wait to join my first BOM project. I loved reading about the designers inspiration for their star BOM. Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary, Dear Marysia, and Dear Robert all not only inspired me alos but I learned a bit of genealogy information when reading about Marysia! I hope someday I will be able to create a personalized quilt and I would dedicate it to all of the warm and welcoming quilters I have met that have encouraged me to try this craft! 5 years and not a lot of confidence but I am still trying!

  140. 1. Sunshine Lily
    2. Dear Robert
    3. Sister Mary
    4. Dear Marysia

I would dedicate my work to my husband, Neale. He's a big space nut, so the stars are appropriate. 🙂 He's unfailingly loyal to all his friends and family and would do anything for us. The only things that might rival me in his affection is his love of science fiction and general geekery. He is passionate about his hobbies, and about sharing them with others. He works very hard to help his friends have a good time. The world needs more people who spread joy and happiness to others. Neale is the love of my life, and an inspiration to me.

  141. Sunshine Lily
    Dear Robert
    Sister Mary
    Dear Marysia

  144. Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert, Sister Mary, and Dear Marysia! Loving the names and the colors of this beautiful mystery quilt…….fingers are crossed to win!

  145. Dear Robert, Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary and Dear Marysia are the block names for the mystery quilt. My star is my grandmother she was very strong like Joanna Figueroa's grandmother was but mine lived on the American frontier. She was tiny, had red naturally curly hair and blue eyes. She left home at 18 to make her way in the world and became a cook on a cattle ranch. The cowboys would bring in half a side of beef in the morning and expect dinner, and she'd do it. She could sew the tiniest little stiches. She tried to teach me but mine always looked like "the pigs was in it". I really miss her. I would name my star Beautiful Mary for her.

  146. Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert, Sister Mary and Dear Marysia – I'm excited to make all these blocks! I would dedicate my quilt to my husband who has learned to appreciate every quilt I make, my own Dear Stewart.

  147. Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert and Sister Mary are the 3 blocks. I'd dedicate this quilt to my son and future daughter-in-law. The minute I saw it I knew it would be their wedding quilt and signed up immediately. My son has been going to grad school while working full time. It put a great deal of stress on him and I was concerned for his well-being. Then he met this wonderful young woman who is supportive of his efforts and a genuinely sweet, intelligent woman. The change in him has been amazing and I feel blessed that she'll be part of our family.

  148. Sunshine Lily, Dear Robert, Sister Mary, and Dear Marysia are the 4 gorgeous blocks.

I would name my block after my daughter Grace. She brings so much twinkle and shine to my life.

  149. The four blocks are Sunshine Lily, Sister Mary, Dear Marysia and Dear Robert.

I would dedicate my star to Nana. She's 90 something and still going strong. I love hearing her stories of growing up, getting married, and living during WWII. Her stories of the family saving their sugar rations for six months just to have a small 8" wedding cake makes me realize how lucky we are to live in the age that we do.

I started learning to quilt a few years ago and the quilt I made in class I gave her for that Christmas. Each year for her birthday and Christmas I try to make her something, homemade gifts always amaze her. I tell her I'll do better next time (as I will have more practice). She always jokes "if I'm even around!" No matter the flaws, she loves every one of the gifts. She inspires me to do better, and can recognize every loving stitch that goes into what ever I make.

I would name my star "Joan Shines" after Nana Joan.

  150. Star names are 1. Sunshine Lily 2. Dear Robert 3. Sister Mary & 4. Dear Marysia

I would name my star Sweet Elayna after my 9 mo. old granddaughter. She is our 1st girl in the family and we are crazy about her.
Thanks for the chance to win
