Added Awareness: FREE Awareness Ribbon FPP Pattern & Tutorial

This year, the ByAnnie team has encouraged all of us participating in the blog hop to choose a cancer ribbon color that is personal to us so that, as a community, we can spread awareness for more than just breast cancer. It is a sad truth that everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another, and we chose to highlight ovarian cancer by making our project with a teal ribbon.

If you would like to donate to support efforts to treat, cure, and care for those facing ovarian cancer, we encourage you to donate to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOOC), the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, or the American Cancer Society.

Awareness Ribbon FPP Tutorial

In the spirit of widening awareness for all cancers, we wanted to offer a free pattern that you can customize for anyone in your life who needs support. The Awareness Ribbon FPP Block finishes at 12.5″ square, making it super versatile! Add one of these blocks into a quilt, finish it into a pillow, or applique it onto a tote and carry your cause with you. However you choose to finish it, this block is designed to remind us all that we are never alone in our struggles and that there is always a reason for hope.

Step 1: Cut Out Your Pattern & Fabric

Download and print a copy of the FREE Awareness Ribbon FPP Block Template. Following the cutting guide at the top of the page, cut out your fabric, and cut on the outer solid lines of the three section pieces.

Further cutting instructions:

Section A: Cut one 3.5″ square and cut it on the diagonal to create the pieces you need for 3A and 4A. Do the same thing to the 4″ square to create pieces 5A and 6A.

Border: Cut 2 – 2.75″ x 10.5″ rectangles
Cut 2 – 2″ x 13″ rectangles

We used Gentler Times Raindrop Delightful Yardage, Gentler Times Cozy Endearing Yardage, and Gentler Times Cozy Bygone Yardage from the Gentler Times Collection by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs to make the teal ribbon, and we used scraps from Stitchy Staffer Kailee’s Beginner Quilt Series to make the pink one. ByAnnie also made a helpful Cancer Awareness Solid Fabric Reference Chart for all the cancer ribbon colors, if you want to make yours with solids!

Step 2: Piecing The Sections

All foundation paper is pieced in a similar way, so once you learn the process, you can pick up almost any pattern and get straight to piecing!

If you are new to foundation paper piecing, check out our Foundation Paper Piecing Video Tutorial Playlist to get a hang of the process, and reference this list of steps when you need a refresher.

  • With wrong sides facing each other, use a Sewline Glue Pen to attach the first piece of fabric to the paper.
  • With right sides facing, align the fabric 1 piece with the fabric 2 piece along the seam line, flip your work so the paper is facing up, and sew directly along the seam line, stitching about 1/4″ beyond the line on either side.
  • With the paper still facing you, use an Add A Quarter Ruler to help fold the paper back on that sewing line and trim the excess fabric to 1/4″
  • Use a Quick Press Seam Roller or an iron without steam to press the fabric open.
  • Repeat these three steps for each of the fabric pieces in numerical order.
  • Once all pieces are attached, trim any excess fabric that extends beyond the paper.

Finally, sew together sections B and C, and then attach those to section A. Once the three sections are attached, you can remove all the paper and give it a good press!

Step 3: Add Borders & Trim

Sew the 2.75″ x 10.5″ rectangles to the sides of the block, and then sew the 2″ x 13″ rectangles to the top and bottom of the block.

Using a 12.5″ Creative Grids ruler, trim the entire block to a 12.5″ square, ensuring the ribbon is centered.

Step 3: Finish Your Block

There are sew many fun ways to finish your blocks, so have fun and get creative! Here are a few finishing tutorials that would work with this block:
