This spooky season marks the six-year sew-iversary of the free Trick or Treat Carry Along Bag pattern we released in 2018. To celebrate, we’re sewing with the Hey Boo Collection by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics and showcasing a finishing detail that’s so cute you won’t beleaf it till you see it. Whether you’ve seen this project before or it’s your first time, it’s sure to end up on your to-sew list this Fall!
Trick or Treat Carry Along Bag Tutorial
Are you ready to make this festive Trick or Treat Carry Along Bag? Let’s get started!
You’ll need to gather the supplies listed and follow our FREE Trick or Treat Carry Along Bag Pattern! Leslie Rutland of The Seasoned Homemaker designed this pattern for Fat Quarter Shop. If you’ve never made a tote bag before, our pattern gives you step-by-step instructions to walk you through it! Fun fact: the Stitchy Staffer who made this bag had never made a tote bag before—it’s officially beginner-tested and approved!
Supplies
Gather the following supplies, and then follow this pattern for step-by-step instructions.
- ½ yard of Bubble Gum Pink Pumpkin Patch for Body
- 1 yard of Purple Haze Webs for Top, Lining, and Handles
- ¼ yard of Ghost White Practical Magic Stars for Flange
- 50wt Aurifil Orchid 100% Cotton Mako Thread
- 50wt Aurifil Natural White 100% Cotton Mako Thread
Add Flair With Fun Foliage Decorative Stitches
In our sewing studio, we have the Juki DX7 sewing machine, and it comes with tons of cute decorative stitches! For the decorative detail on the flange, we used this oak leaf stitch that comes on the machine. Stitching in the Orchid Aurifil thread on Ghost White Practical Magic Stars for the flange tied in the pretty pinks and fall foliage that’s center stage in the Hey Boo Collection.
Sewing Tip: Add your favorite decorative stitch to the flange and handles before assembling, and make sure to set the stitches with your iron to get this crisp finish on your design.
Did you catch that our Stitchy Staffer even added this stitch to the center of the handles in Natural White Aurafill thread?
