Designer Tidbits: Thomas Knauer

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Thomas Knauer to the Jolly Jabber. Thomas’ latest fabric collection is Flock for Andover Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Flock collection?
A:This collection started with the Brady Bunch, the clothes, the architecture of the Brady’s house, the whole nine yards. The oranges and yellows actually came from this picture of the Brady’s singing:

This collection is really about my love affair with 1973.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A:
a. Time to Change by The Brady Bunch
b. You are the Sunshine of My Life by Stevie Wonder
c. Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond
d. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves by Cher

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A:Okay. That is evil. I’ll go with 5652-E, the feature print in orange. It just makes me really, really happy. It is ready to go as a pillow and I need to make a skirt out of it.

Though, I gotta say I truly love working with the pink dots (picture me sticking my tongue out at your rules!!!).

Q:What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A:This baby quilt I am working on right now…

Q:If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A:A heavy blend of Corinthian Leather and daisies (insert Ricardo Montalban there saying Corinthian Leather).

Q:Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A:I can give you more than a sneak peek; you can see the whole thing… Savanna Bop is expected to hit the world in May/June!!! Fat Quarter Shop also has it on their Coming Soon page.

Q:If you had a mascot, what animal would it be?
A:Jasper Johns in a Lemur costume. Don’t know why, it just would be…

Q:Who is your favorite celebrity?
A:Anjelica Huston. She is so far beyond awesome!!!

Q:If we were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
A:I want both David Byrne (circa 1977) and Jonathan Richman (also circa 1977) to play me, and to have it randomly change from scene to scene who is playing me. I’d even want them to play the child me (especially David Byrne).

Q:Who is your favorite fabric designer not including yourself?
A: I’m going to nimbly sidestep that question by saying Jamie Reid; he was behind so much of the amazing designs associated with the 70’s British punk scene. Oh, and whoever the costume designer was for The Brady Bunch.
