2019 Designer Mystery Block of the Month - The Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog

2019 Designer Mystery Block of the Month

Do you love a good mystery? This might be our best one yet! We are sew happy to present the 2019 Designer Mystery Block of the Month (it’s now sold out)  ! This has been one of our favorite projects for the past 11 years and we are even more excited to be going into our 12th! Check out the first block of this year’s Designer Mystery Quilt!

Do you have any idea how the rest of it will look?  Here’s a portion we can show you, the center of the quilt finishing! This year’s quilt finishes at a generous 84.5” square.

Every year, the Designer Mystery quilt is made up of 12 blocks designed by 12 Moda designers and each block measures 12″ x 12″. The great thing about the quilt is that is perfect for quilters of all levels, so everyone is invited!

This year, the club will use fabrics from Orchard by April Rosenthal for Moda Fabrics!

Designer Mystery Block of the Month

Ready for a monthly surprise? When you sign up for the Designer Mystery Block of the Month you’ll receive a shipment of the fabrics and pattern needed to make one block a month for 12 months. In the image below, you can see the spaces your monthly Block of the Month club will fill in (Blocks 1-12). The club will ship on the 10th of each month starting in June. We have a limited number of spots open, so make sure to reserve yours today!

Fabric and patterns for blocks one through twelve will be mailed to you each month.

Finishing Your Quilt

After sewing up your blocks that comprise the main part of the quilt, you will need additional fabric to complete the center block, corners, borders, binding and backing.  (Backing sets and Finishing Kits are sold out). If you don’t have one, you may use the Fabric Requirements below to know which fabrics from the Orchard collection you’ll need to make your quilt like the pattern. Please note: the 12″X20″ cut can be found in a fat quarter or 1/3 yard cut. The pattern was written to use 7″ Triangles on a Roll Half-Square Triangle Paper as an easy way to batch out the HST’s for the quilt’s border.

  1. This will be my third (I think) and love everything about the kids. FQS plans great quilts with great fabrics and plenty extra for mistakes!

  2. You can depend on FQS’ BOM quilt kits to be well designed, with great instructions. Have been enjoying them for probably the past ten years. Love Kimberley and her team!!

  3. I can’t find the finishing kit for this project or the fabric for the finishing kit. Will you have more? I have already signed up for the Designer Mystery Block of the Month but would like the finishing kit too.

    1. Hi Barb, I’m sorry but we sold out of the finishing kits already. Please refer to the fabric requirements above for what you’ll need to finish it out. You can call our customer service department and they’ll help you select the right fabrics and amounts. service@fatquartershop.com

  4. I just ordered fabric for the finishing of the new Designer Mystery Quilt. This is my third BOM with FQS and I was amazed that the center of the quilt was not part of the BOM. After going on the blog today I discovered only the outside blocks are part of the BOM. Wow. I won’t make this mistake again. Still love FQS but initial wording for BOM should have said the center of the quilt is the finishing kit. I sure hope the pattern for the center comes with the last month or do we have to buy that separately too?

  5. Hi, this is my first Designer Mystery Quilt with FQS and I’m so excited. I was not able to buy the finishing kit, but purchased the fabric. How do I purchase the pattern for the center block. Will that come later, or is it sold separately. Thanks, Donna Q

  6. This is my third (or fourth??) Designer Mystery with FQS! I also have (some done & some not) a bunch of other BOMs, SALs, QALs, clubs, etc through y’all! They are always top-notch quality, easy to understand, include plenty of fabric and always as promised!!! Can’t wait to receive my kit for this one & get started!!!

  7. I would like to know if I can be put on a list for 2019 bom,in case you have any more openings if someone cancels their order please.

  8. I really think they should have ordered more finishing kits, especially since it is part of the quilt. I am disappointed that the information wasn’t made clear that the finishing kit was really a major part of the quilt. This I think is the first time they have incorporated something like this, because I have done other BOM’s.

  9. Please please I want to sign up for the Monthly Mystery Block. Is there anyway I can start this month.
Maybe someone is offering it so I could join.

    1. Daphne, you will likely have quite a bit of leftovers from the block of the month to help you finish the quilt – if you’re judicious with them and don’t have too many recuts. Some of those can be used to finish the top. I’m not sure how much more you’ll need to finish it.

  10. This is my third year with the mystery block of the month. So excited about this project and I love the kits are generous for any fabric cutting mistakes I might make. This will be a stunning quilt!

  11. Why can’t people participate in the Mystery BOM but purchase our own fabrics since the kit is sold out? Can the pattern be purchased?
