2015 Summer Book Club: Simply Color by Vanessa Christenson

Hello everyone! Welcome back to our 2015 Summer Book Club. Today, we’re chatting about our love of color through the Simply Color books by Moda Fabrics Designer, Vanessa Christenson of V & Co
Who can resist these sweet books packed with beautiful photographs and a series of patterns that focus on one color at a time. There’s Red, Orange, & Yellow (with Blue, Purple, and Green on the way). It’s definitely a collector’s item for color lovers!

Although we love color, we love monochromatic hues as well. Jocelyn decided to create the Creamsicle quilt in Modern Background Paper collection and Black Bella Solids

Our pattern writer, Krystal decided to make the Star Student bag into an Ipad case with a mixture of Cotton + Steel and L’s Modern Basics by Lecien Fabrics.

  1. I seem to include some shade of red in everything I make lately. Thanks for the giveaway.

  2. I am drawn to blue which finds its way into nearly every one of my quilted projects. Thanks for the giveaway! peks1001(at)yahoo(dot)com

  3. Red by far. Almost every quilt I make has red in it somewhere. My kitchen is even done in vintage red and white. Red makes me happy.

  4. White! I love it as a sashing to tone down whatever colour scheme I have going on. It is a great go to when I create modern takes on classics.

  5. I am in a GREEN phase right now. It really pops. You can go so many shades with it and it always looks great but i really love the kelly greens and lime greens for ppretty color.

  6. My favorite quilts all seem to have white backgrounds. It is just so fresh and happy. I've played with other background colors, but my favorite is always clean white.

  7. I always seem to try to find a way to include purple. It doesn't work all the time, but I give it my best shot. Also, I'm enjoying the turquoise and red with white combinations like what is in Winter Wonderland.

  8. Does white count?? Since I've started to quilt – I just love all bright colors, but it is still hard to move away from my favorite, white, 'background' fabric :)!!

  9. I definitely have to have some teal, usually as a main color, but definitely in there somewhere in almost everything I do. Luckily, my daughters like teal, too 🙂

  10. I love the V & Co. color books too, looking forward the the purple, green and blue. My favorite color to use in my quilts is Aqua.

  11. I am pretty to new to quilting. So I haven't chosen one color over another a whole lot yet. I really love them all. Purple does have a soft place in my heart though.

  12. That's an easy one: white, aqua and red! White is almost always there, aqua most of the time and I think red in every second quilt.

  13. Orange. I always have a piece of orange in every quilt. It is like a secret signature for me and my favorite color since childhood. I have done lots of quilts in orange and white only.

  14. Chocolate Brown!!!
I mean…what can go wrong with a rich deep chocolate?

I find myself reaching for it a lot to balance out a quilt combo or solve a problem in someone else color play.

  15. My favorite color to use would be turquoise. It seems to coordinate well with just about any color and adds a beautiful pop of color to any project.

  16. My favorite color to use in a quilt varies depending on my mood and the season. Right now, I think my favorite colors in quilts are turquoise, orange, pink, and teal.

  17. Lately I can't resist teal. It's such a wonderful pastel. I have a wine bottle that is just tinged a slight yellow color and has a teal foil at the neck. I think it would be a great color combo for a quilt.

  18. I AM DEFINITELY A RED GIRL:) MY SECOND COLOR IS YELLOW. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE EDUCATION YOU PRESENT I YOUR BLOG!!!

  19. My favorite color is blue but I love all colors in my quilts and tend to use a lot of colors. Thanks so much for the chance to win 🙂

  20. I cannot say that I have a favorite color, other than white for backgrounds. My quilts have been crafted from a variety of colors based on the fabric's design and the intended recipient. This year I challenged myself to use light gray in the background with navy prints. I liked the look. Thanks for a chance in the giveaway. These books have been on my reading list.

  21. Since I am a printed fabric freak I love all colors….but lean more to the fall colors, and I think rust is my favorite. I also love teal with the other fall colors. An since orange is the new black, loving it as well! See, can't decide! Thanks for the chance to win a new book. I need the inspiration! Helen G. hrglover@hotmail.com

  22. I love scrap quilts, so all colors are used, but I do have a redwork quilt in progress.

  23. My favorite color is purple so a bit of purple makes it into almost every quilt I make. Thanks for the giveaway!

  24. I am obsessed with orange – not an easy color to put in some projects – so I have been working with greys – there are so many shades of grey (no pun intended) to work with!

  25. I love aqua and turquoise. Those colors often appear in my quilts. Thanks for the opportunity to win the prizes. Also, thank you for the information and inspiration I get from Jolly Jabber!

  26. Purple has long been my favorite color. I'm really a rainbow lover though, as my Pinterest will show. Thanks for this giveaway! ktsquiltdreama (at)gmail (dot)com

  27. I always loved getting the largest brand new box of crayons because I would just drool over all the beautiful colors. I love them all but I am especially fond of purple. I love pastels, I love Jewel tones, I love muted colors….it makes choosing colors for a quilt hard to do but picking from a fabric collection really helps!

  28. Although I am passionate about purple, I gravitate towards using lime green in many projects. It just seems to complement so many other colors without standing out. I do love color of any kind!

  29. I love a nice, buttery yellow! Though finding those yellows can be a bit tricky. Thank you! Sarah: crjandsbj(at)netzero(dot)com

  30. I'm a bright color person, usually avoiding browns and purples. That said, there's always that exception where I can resist blacks, browns, and purples.
Maybe these books will explain why I do color flip flops.

  31. Despite what I may think my favorite color is- it surely must be red!

I love making scrap quilts. No what my intentions may be as I start a quilt – I always end up up with lots of glorious, luscious, reds.
A recent quilt began as a scrappy kaleidoscope made using only the bits in my scrapbox. I have called it "My Scrapbox Had Red" !

I love how we each seem to gravitate to one color or color family! I always stay on "the warm side" of the wheel!

  32. Lately there is a pop of red in almost every quilt I make. This is pleasing my partner, who, from the beginning of my quilting life, has said that each quilt, regardless of its pattern or style, should have one red square in it somewhere. When I explained that that simply wouldn't work on some quilts he told me I was too didactic. I guess we're meeting in the middle. (And I am didactic.)

  33. I seem to always go for blues and purples… but my most recent project was rainbow place mats – so I guess you never know! 🙂

  34. I am always drawn to orange-yellow- gold any time I see fabric-candles- flowers etc. Good question!!

  35. BROWN-yes that's right-brown. I know most people think actual colors-like red, yellow, blue, purple, green and I kinda like those colors also. But then I walked into the living room and looked at all my stacks of quilts and the one thing that I noticed that I hadn't thought about before was that my quilts all had something in common. Ninety-nine percent of the quilts were in various shades of brown. So…… I guess MY fabric color obsession is brown!

  36. Orange is the colour I like to include in my quilts. For me it is base colour, almost the 'new black'. With so many shades of orange to choose from, there's always one I can use, even if it's only as part of the backing or label.

  37. Yellow is my go to colour.. it is bright, cheery, happy and usually makes most people feel warm. I love sunshine so I think every quilt is good to have some variation of sun colours in the there.

  38. Red .. I love red .. red/grey .. red/black .. red/cream .. red/white .. just give me red 😉

  39. Can't go wrong with red, although I am enjoying more of a coral color currently. I just love the way all the colors play off each other.

  40. Can't go wrong with red, although I am enjoying more of a coral color currently. I just love the way all the colors play off each other.

  41. My favorite color for quilts is hodge-podge scraps. I am working on a king-sized quilt with each window made from a different color of fabric. Blue is my favorite color, but haven't made a blue quilt yet.

  42. I seem to be drawn to orange – especially red-orange in my quilts. Depending on what it is paired with, it can work for a fall quilt (eg. paired with golds and browns) or it can be happy and fun if it is paired with blue or lime green.

  43. My favourite colour of the moment is all shades of brown. Of course this changes from time to time depending on who or where the quilt/wall hanging etc. if for. Thank you for the chance to win your giveaway.

    Janet

  44. Purples and blues with greens are some of my favorite quilt colors.

    bjkaup(at)huntel(dot)net

  45. I love, love, love ALL colors….with white! I use a lot of green, too. Green is another neutral to me. But bright white makes every color gorgeous! And happy!
Thanx for this opportunity! Always wanted these books!

  46. PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE. When I first started quilting, purple fabric was pretty much unheard of, or it was late 1880's/Civil war dark and brownish. Sometimes violet ditzy calico prints, but not like now where you have these gorgeous crocus, orchid, lilac… I could go on and one, but if pressed to pick only one color, purple it is.

  47. My favorite color to use in a quilt is brown. My walls are "chocolate milk" brown and I love to make wall hangings to go with this color. Thanks, Marcia

  48. Turquoise. Every quilt is better is better with turquoise. I think gray is a new favorite for me too. Thanks for the giveaway.
