Mystery All the Trimmings Quilt and Stitch Along

The header of the blog says "All the Trimmings Mystery Quilt and Stitch Along"

Ho Ho Ho! Guess what? Christmas in July is happening… in September! We’re hoping to transport you to a winter wonderland with our next mystery quilt and stitch along, All the Trimmings.

Each Tuesday for 5 weeks starting September 7, 2021, we will release one FREE quilt and cross stitch pattern. Quilters, you can join Kimberly Jolly as she shows you how to cut and sew a new block each week in our free All the Trimmings video series! Just like Christmas, the best part about this is the surprise, so we won’t reveal the look of the quilt or cross stitch pattern beforehand (except for the first block). To follow along, bookmark this page, check back each week for updates, and subscribe to the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube channel so you never miss a video.

About the Quilt

Different fabric swatches are displayed with the very first All the Trimmings block layered on top of the fabric. The block is a red and green holly leaf!

The quilt finishes at 33.5″ x 38.5″. We are sewing our quilt with the Christmas Morning collection by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics.

The very first All the Trimmings block is partially hidden in a project bag. The block is a red and green holly leaf!

To sew this quilt with your own fabrics, start with a Layer Cake and 1.5 yards of background fabric. Download the fabric requirements for all the details. 2″ Half Square Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper and 3″ Half Square Triangles on a Roll Triangle Paper are optional supplies to keep those blocks looking crisp and sharp!

UPDATE on 8/25/2021: You asked, and we heard you! If you’re looking for an alternative to the solid black background we use in our pattern, you can try these others. We have colored in some examples of the light options so you can get an idea of what they will look like.

About the Cross Stitch

The first row of the mystery All the Trimmings cross stitch piece is revealed under red, green, and blue floss. They are multiple stitched Holly leaves.
All the Trimmings cross stitch measures 6.625″ x 8.625″ when stitched on 14 Count Aida!

The All the Trimmings Cross Stitch Piece will be revealed row by row with a new mystery pattern each week. This design was inspired by our Christmas-themed mystery quilt, so if you want to make both projects, there’s nothing stopping you from creating a matching pair!

The All the Trimmings Weeks Dye Works Thread Pack

To make your cross stitch just like ours, you’ll need the All the Trimmings Weeks Dye Works Thread Pack and Chalkboard Black 14 Count Aida cloth. To stitch up this design with your own supplies, download the stitch along supply list for all the details. The colors you choose are up to you, but we’ve collected some items on the All the Trimmings Supply Page to get your stitching off to a good start.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Chalkboard Black cloth, Kimberly suggests using Vintage Country Mocha 14 Count Aida!

    1. You can make it larger by adding more blocks to each row & more rows with other blocks. Borders would also make it larger. You’d need more fabric of course but it’s doable. Use your imagination.

  1. Love, love this- both parts!! Thank you for the Christmas jump start and thank you for all you put into this GIFT for us!!!

  2. I have a “Deer Christmas” layer cake that I want to use…would a white background look ok with the pattern??

    1. Yes absolutely! We are also mocking up a couple different versions of the quilt with different fabrics now that our quilt kit is sold out. 🙂

  3. I’m glad the quilt is wall hanging size! I just might get one finished in time for “this” Christmas instead of my usual “maybe next” Christmas! Looking forward to ir!

  4. I just got several fat eighths of Christmas Morning! I’ll have to add from my stash but I have a question: Will fat eighths work instead of 10” squares? I’m looking forward to a new mystery quilt. Just the right size!

    1. Hi Monique! You definitely can use fat eighths! However, you will have lots of fabric left over. You will have enough to make 2 quilts!

      1. We got a fat eighth bundle in the July Sew Sampler box. Would this be enough fabric for the sew along?

  5. Last year’s Christmas in July Sew Along was awesome fun! I love the wall hanging size on this one and have the perfect place for it. I can’t wait to get started. Thank you for all the fun!!!!

  6. I love doing your Stitch Along’s. This will be my third and I’ve got the supplies ordered. I’ve printed off the finish for Bats and Boo’s. Now I can finish it and be ready to start All The Trimmings. Thank you for reigniting a passion in me for an art that I was doing 40+ years ago.

  7. Can’t wait!! I’m using a Layer Cake. If I starch it, will there be enough material?
Thanks. I did last years QAL & loved it!!

  8. Can you tell me what color you would use if you didn’t want to use the blackboard black to stitch? I like the idea of something sparkly. Thank you for your help.

  9. Is it possible to incorporate some larger prints in this sew along. I have a layer cake with some larger santas and trees.

  10. Thank you so much for all of the different background options for this. It was extremely helpful.

  11. I wish they would tell you what the pattern looks like and not have it be a surprise – I am kind of picky on what I like for Christmas designs so I guess I will pass.

    1. You can always collect the patterns. Then, when it’s finished, you can decide whether you like the finished quilt. Best of both worlds.

  12. I am in and I am going to start on the date! Tired of playing catchup!!
    love the Fat Quarter Shop!

    1. I’m not familiar with that collection so I’m not sure, but as long as you choose a background fabric that compliments that collection, you’ll be in good shape.

  13. I have so many irons in the fire right now but I do plan on saving the patterns to work on at a later date.

  14. Love sew alongs!Looking forward to sewing this little project. Using the Christmas Morning fabric.

  15. I am onboard, and will start with Morris Holiday, since I have a FQ pack and plenty of cream yardage for the background. My questions are:
Block size and are rotary cutting directions or sizes of the shapes in the block given? I can possibly use my AccuQuilt dies for the shapes?

  16. I’m in! Loved the Bats and Boos. Did it with scrapes, but was short so I made two pumpkins in one print and two in the other. Can’t wait for this one to start!

  17. I’m all set to join in the fun sewing the quilt! I have the kit and fabric is pressed. Who doesn’t love a good mystery!!!!

  18. Here we are at Tuesday, Sept 7, but I can’t find the link to the first pattern download. Is it up yet?

    1. Hi Wanda! Our chart shows you where each missing week will go! Choose how much fabric you want around your border, most choose between 2″ and 3″ 🙂 Measure down to that, then across, then count 11 rows down to the top row of this week’s stitching!

  19. To those who can’t find the pattern download:
Scroll up to the the section that says “PATTERN RELEASE SCHEDULE”. Below the pictures, you can click on the links to download the block pattern on the left, and/or the crossstitch pattern on the right.

  20. I think the SKU in the dark fabric options for Moda Cross Weave Black on Black is incorrect. It is showing above as 12119-53. I ordered some from another source because it wasn’t available from FQS at the time. I have just had it get stained from spraying on Best Press – so I checked went to FQS in case I need to buy more. But SKU #12119-53 is Black on Grey. Was the recommended fabric supposed to be Black on Grey or Black on Black? If B on B, then the given SKU is wrong and should be 12120-53. I’m not crazy about this lighter grey fabric that I bought, based on the SKU. Please clarify if possible. Thanks!

    1. Hi Kathy,

Thank you for bringing that to our attention! The fabric is misnamed above, but the SKU is correct. It should read Black on Grey. I’m sorry that you’re not happy with the look of it.

      1. Thanks so much for checking on that. I actually feel better knowing Black on Grey was recommended, and it’s the one I bought. It looks quite nice next to the Christmas Morning collection. I am waiting for the part that got stained after starching to dry out, after rinsing with cold water. Consensus from the Stitch Squad is that the stains will be gone.

  21. This is sew much fun. Just finished row 4 waiting for finishing😍. I also did Bats and Boos wall hanging and just finishing up the cross stitch. Thank you FQS.

  22. Was there supposed to be a “finishing video” published today for the cross stitch piece?

  23. I’d love to see or hear how some others are quilting this wallhanging. I can’t decide what might look best. I was thinking to do either some straight line or wavy quilting from top to bottom, but I’m also considering some outline quilting, but don’t know what to do in the bigger spaces. Please post some pictures of your finished quilt!

  24. I’m trying to figure out how to quilt it also. The quilts that I’ve done in the past were a little different. I’m trying to figure out if I need to change thread color with each or pick one color and stay with it. Not sure of the best color or colors.
