We’re bringing you a free pattern and video series called Jelly Snowflake Mystery Quilt to celebrate Christmas in July. It’s a good time to start something for the holidays. And… it’s a MYSTERY!
Each week in July we will release one video tutorial with a FREE pattern with a little help from our quilty friends. If you’re new to quilting, the detailed videos will show you how to cut, stitch and sew every step of the way! We won’t reveal the look of the quilt beforehand. That’s a secret! If you participated in our Merry Mini Mystery Quilt last year you know how fun it can be.
We have a great group of quilt designers joining us for this event! Each week we’ll visit one designer’s blog for the video and pattern.

All you need to start with are fourteen 2.5″ X 42″ strips (or a Jelly Roll) and 2.5 yards of background fabric. This quilt finishes at 50.5″ square. Bonus: In case you’re interested in making this quilt larger, Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts will be sharing finishing instructions to enlarge the quilt to 70.5″ square with the addition of borders using the leftover scraps. So stay tuned for those instructions on July 30 and follow Edyta’s blog for more info.

We made our super secret sample with Christmas Figs II by Fig Tree & Co. for Moda Fabrics, but you can sew yours in any collection. It doesn’t have to be Christmas fabric at all!

I didn’t but boy I wish I had. I may have to start
I would like to do this as well!
I would like to join this. Best way to beat the corona lead depression.
I am starting now! Just a little late!
Sounds like fun!
Yes! Count me in!!
This sounds perfect for me! I will get to choosing my fabric
Hope you join us. Please note our original fabric requirements stated 2 yards background. We’ve updated that to 2.5 yards.
I was wondering if the 2.5 yd background could be scrappy? I have white/cream fat quarters that I’d like to use, but wanted to double check first. Thank you!
I’m in! Love all things Christmas!
It sounds like a plan!!! I look forward to making this and having fun along the way.
Wonderful! Please note our original fabric requirements stated 2 yards background. We’ve updated that to 2.5 yards.
I would like to do this
Should be fun! Thank you!
CAN’T WAIT…I’m in and looking forward to it!!
I have my Jelly Roll and yardage ready. I just wish we were using all the jelly roll.
I surely would like to try this one! I truly love mystery quilts. I will have to use my own fabric, so I will start putting some things together today!
I have a question about the amount of background fabric needed. In the post it says 2 yards and on the fabric requirement sheet it says 2 and a half yards. Which is it?
It is 2-1/2 yards. If you follow them on Instagram they posted that they made a mistake on the initial post. 😀
I will join your group! Looking forward to the block patterns.
Sounds great. I will join the group
I participated in last year’s turned out super cute that I made two of them. I will join in the fun this year.
What are the final dimensions please? Thanks!
It measures 50.5″ square.
I’d like to know the final dimensions as well!
50-1/2 inches square
I’m excited, this is my first quilt along!
Could a jolly bar work in place of jelly roll?
Yes you can for the most part, except there is one cutting that requires a piece longer than the JB rectangle (5″ x 10″). You could piece together 2 Jolly Bars and subcut those pieces, and I estimate you need about 28 JB rectangles minimum, more if you want to cut prints as desired.
So much Fun to Do A Quilt Along. Specially When
My Birthday Is
July 25th ☺🎄
I always Say I Was Born
” Christmas In July”
Could a pre-cut be used for the background fabric?
You can. A Layer Cake (10″ x 10″) will work for everything except the borders.
Looking forward to my first QAL.
So I’m new to this quilt along idea. I really as want to join but kinda busy the 3rd week. Do the instructions stay up for more then one week?
Yes, the instructions will stay up indefinitely.
I already have my jelly roll picked out and from my stash!!!
I have never quilted but I can sew. Is this something I would be able to do?
Yes, you can do this as long as you can make accurate cuts and sew with a 1/4″ seam. It’s all straight lines. The videos will be pretty detailed.
Sew fun! Thank you!
Me, too, and it has colors like a Mexico fiesta….hope it works!
Awesome! I have a winter jelly roll that I was wondering what to do with!
I’m new to this group. Cant wait to get started
I am in. Excited to join in on the fun.
I’m in! Ordered some Debbie Mumm Winter Gnomes fabric for this.
Yes please, looks like fun.
From Perth Western Australia……Snow excited. I love snowflakes the most. Never done a sew along. Now to choose my fabrics. 💞❄️
I’m in. Just placed my order.
Yes please, sounds like good fun.
Sounds like fun. I’m going to use the Solstice jelly roll from my stash. I need to find a background
I have a few Jelly Rolls that have just been waiting for the right pattern to come along! Lemon slices on royal blue, coffee themed, Americanca… Now to choose which one. Never made a jelly roll quilt. Can’t wait!
Count me in for sure. It sounds like sewing good fun!
I’m in! Just ordered the fabric .
This will be my first sew along. Looking forward to it
Glad you’re joining us!
I understand there was a live discussion about this last Friday? How do I access that? And count me in. I’d like to give it a go. Pretty new at quilting.

Sounds fun! I’m in!
Great timing for me, I am interested.
I’m in too!now to pick some fun fabrics!
Is this beginner friendly?
Out of town. Hope to be able to catch up.
I am counting down the days.
23 to go 🙂
Yes ~ I am in. This will be my first sew along.
I have Tula Pink’s dots and stripes jelly roll. is that a good choice for this sew along? thanks
I cannot believe with all the fabric I have, that I do not have a Christmas jelly roll. Would fat quarters work?
Sounds like fun. Count me in!
Looks like fun! I’m in!
Would fat quarters work for this?
Do you only use 14 strips total from the jelly roll or the whole roll? Sorry, I’m just not understanding.
Yes, you only need 14 strips from the Jelly Roll.
Sounds like fun! I’m in!!I’ll use only what I already have!
Count me i, looking forward to seeing it complete.
Count me in, looking forward to seeing it complete.
Count me in, too!
Me, ME!! Sounds like such fun! Great idea! Maybe I’ll actually be able to finish before THIS Christmas,
If I use my stash is it best to have 14 different fabrics? or is fewer ok?
14 or fewer is okay as well.
My fabric is ordered! I’m ready
This is my first mystery quilt. Do the 14 strips have to be different fabrics or just 14 that can be duplicate prints?
It’s up to you. They can be the same if you like. there are four to five main block types that you can use different colors for. You can also make it monochromatic with just 2 or 3 colors. You might find some good inspiration here on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/jellysnowflakeqal/
I’m in! I will be using fabrics in my stash!
I’ve got my fabric and ready to go
I’m in along with some if my quilting friends!
I’m in. Can’t wait.
Looking forward to starting this project
Do we have to sign up somewhere or just hop in the blogs? I really want to participate too!
There is no sign-up! You just need to follow along with the blogs.
Excited to join in.
I’m ready! I bought the Christmas fig book when I first heard it being used. ( I thought we had to have it) I have my Christmas jelly rolls ready, actually 2 colors. I’ll decide at the last minute.
will be playing along and have my fabric ordered. Hoping it arrives in time.
Looking forward to this as I’ve not done a mystery quilt before.
I’m in! Love all the designers and am looking forward to the quilt!
Will a layer cake work?
Yes. A Layer Cake (10″ x 10″) will work for everything except the borders.
Count me in! It sounds like fun!
I’m in looks like fun.
I’d like to join in.
does it matter on the color scheme? 2 colors or assorted 14 different colors of fabric?
You could do a two-color quilt with the main design (2.5″ strips) one color and the background another. Blue and white make a nice wintry combination as well.
Hello from the UK. I’ve never followed a sew along before so I’m rather excited about it. So far I’ve chosen my jelly roll but will need to get my ‘skates on’ and get the other fabrics together !
Got my Jelly Roll today! Can’t wait to get started. Do we have to register for the quilt along?
Welcome! No, you don’t have to register for the quilt along. Just join us on YouTube each Thursday to follow along with the new video and pattern. https://www.youtube.com/user/FatQuarterShop
Count me in!! Excited!
I am in! I think I might even have a spare Christmas jelly roll in my stash somewhere!
A couple of replies mentioned borders, although they’re not shown in the diagram or mentioned in the yardage requirements. I may want to make mine a bit larger by adding a border, and want to make sure I have the fabric for my top before it becomes unavailable. Would 2 yards be enough? I realize this would increase the backing yardage. Thanks!!
Kathy M… from blog… All you need to start with are fourteen 2.5″ X 42″ strips (or a Jelly Roll) and 2.5 yards of background fabric. This quilt finishes at 50.5″ square. You will need to increase the background to a total of 4 yards. Edyta has the details on her blog for exact binding and backing yardage as well. https://www.laundrybasketquilts.com/blog/quilting-along-jelly-snowflake/
I’m excited about this – it’s my first QAL and looks like fun!
I have been wanting to learn to quilt forever! And this looks like a super fun way to start! As a super newbie…what do you need to get started with this project in terms of thread, cutter, mat etc. Thanks!
I am in, is there a sign up? Do I need to remember to come back here for each new release?
This one will be a first for me
Always wanted to do one
Gwen, there is no need to sign up. Either return to this page each week for a pattern update, or “hop” to that week’s designer blog for the pattern and video. Have fun!
I’m in, can’t wait
I have never done this before. What time and where do I go online to watch the quilt along?
It’s set up as a blog hop, so for Block 1 you can visit Sherri McConnell’s blog tomorrow, June 2 as early as 5 am CST for the pattern and video. https://www.aquiltinglife.com/ Let me know if that works for you!
Thank you Kate. So, I assume the video will be available to view all day at the link you provided, right? I am in southern California and 3 am is a bit early for me, but I am in to watch later.
I am in!! Can’t wait!
I never did a Quilt Along before. Catching up on viewing some of the Quilt Alongs posted since the pandemic started. I have been watching quite a few YouTube videos as I have been working on a couple of old UFO projects. Went through my jelly roll stash and had background of the Bella Solid. All ready to go.
Thanks for joining us!
Out of town. Hope to be able to catch up.
Cathy, the videos will stay up forever so you can watch any time. 🙂
This looks like a fun Quilt along. Love the Jelly roll you choose
So much fun! I love quilt alongs! I have a christmas 1.5″ honey bun of fabric that i would like to use. Do you think i could adapt the pattern to use it??
I am doing this mystery quilt.
Love this idea; question. Can fat quarters be used instead of the jelly roll? I don’t have any jelly rolls but have tons of fat quarters. Thanks!
Yes. I’m using my stash
I’m in! Looks fun and fresh! Thanks!
I pieced the first four blocks and mine are 12 inches not 12 1/2 inches. I am using Christmas Figs II Jelly roll.
This is a great way to better your quilting skills and have fun at the same time. I will join this event.
I have all the fabric but see that the background has changed from 2 yards to 2 1/2 yards required. Not sure I can now get the extra yardage add on for the background. Where does the extra 1/2 yard added come in at? Thank you.
Never mind…I got a plan.
Do you think it would look as good if another section was added to make it a throw? Say the first layout again after the second layout??
The pattern is one that is almost like an X or + shape with 4 quadrants. You could add a row or borders at the bottom to make it larger or a different size. Edyta Sitar is going to be sharing her patterns for adding custom borders on July 31 so check out her blog for details https://www.laundrybasketquilts.com/blog/quilting-along-jelly-snowflake/
No worries. Thank you, Mm.
I have my jelly roll and background, and am ready to get caught up!
Just ordered my fabric. So excited! I will make the larger quilt. Can this be done quilt as you go?
Hi Karen, I think that it can be done QAYG since it’s a simple block construction. Let us know how it goes!
should a person make the blocks from the same fabric or different fabrics? Love this! Can’t wait to see it finished.
As of July 18 I am in and totally caught up!
Do you think 2yds 14” will work?!
Instead of 2 yards and 18″? Yes, you should be fine. We generally overestimate a bit on fabric recommendations so that there’s room for miscuts.
Is it possible to download the directions/pattern? My fabric did not arrive in time to do the sew along and now that I have the fabric, purchased from your shop, I would like to complete this quilt.
The patterns will remain here on this page indefinitely, so you can return when you’re ready.
Thank you so much. I finally found them. I was having a “moment” when looking for them. They were not difficult to find. Thank you again! Looking forward to working on and completing this quilt!
Hi! I’m always late on these things, and just now catching the last block, but I am so going to do this. I always have projects lined up and this one is just been moved up to the top!
Are you going to be posting the finishing instructions? In the video you go a little fast for what we need to cut.
Hi Christine! The finishing instructions are linked above! https://blog.fatquartershop.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/JellySnowflakeFinishing-PatternFINAL.pdf
I love this pattern. It was a lot of not sew. Thank you to eve one involved.
This is my first quilt along, I’m dying to start but my sister in law is coming for a vacation and wants to do it with me So we are going to be playing catch up. Where can we see everyone’s beautiful “Snowflakes”
