9. I have a question about the amount of background fabric needed. In the post it says 2 yards and on the fabric requirement sheet it says 2 and a half yards. Which is it?

   1. It is 2-1/2 yards. If you follow them on Instagram they posted that they made a mistake on the initial post. 😀

    1. It measures 50.5″ square.

16. Could a jolly bar work in place of jelly roll?

    1. Yes you can for the most part, except there is one cutting that requires a piece longer than the JB rectangle (5″ x 10″). You could piece together 2 Jolly Bars and subcut those pieces, and I estimate you need about 28 JB rectangles minimum, more if you want to cut prints as desired.

18. Could a pre-cut be used for the background fabric?

    1. You can. A Layer Cake (10″ x 10″) will work for everything except the borders.

    1. Yes, the instructions will stay up indefinitely.

    1. Yes, you can do this as long as you can make accurate cuts and sew with a 1/4″ seam. It’s all straight lines. The videos will be pretty detailed.

    1. Yes, you only need 14 strips from the Jelly Roll.

    1. 14 or fewer is okay as well.

55. This is my first mystery quilt. Do the 14 strips have to be different fabrics or just 14 that can be duplicate prints?

    1. It’s up to you. They can be the same if you like. there are four to five main block types that you can use different colors for. You can also make it monochromatic with just 2 or 3 colors.     1. You could do a two-color quilt with the main design (2.5″ strips) one color and the background another. Blue and white make a nice wintry combination as well.

76. A couple of replies mentioned borders, although they’re not shown in the diagram or mentioned in the yardage requirements. I may want to make mine a bit larger by adding a border, and want to make sure I have the fabric for my top before it becomes unavailable. Would 2 yards be enough? I realize this would increase the backing yardage. Thanks!!

    1. Kathy M… from blog… All you need to start with are fourteen 2.5″ X 42″ strips (or a Jelly Roll) and 2.5 yards of background fabric. This quilt finishes at 50.5″ square. Bonus: In case you’re interested in making this quilt larger, Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts will be sharing finishing instructions to enlarge the quilt to 70.5″ square with the addition of borders using the leftover scraps. So stay tuned for those instructions on July 30 and follow Edyta’s blog for more info.

90. I pieced the first four blocks and mine are 12 inches not 12 1/2 inches. I am using Christmas Figs II Jelly roll.

    1. The pattern is one that is almost like an X or + shape with 4 quadrants. You could add a row or borders at the bottom to make it larger or a different size.     1. Instead of 2 yards and 18″? Yes, you should be fine. We generally overestimate a bit on fabric recommendations so that there’s room for miscuts.
