Turn your fear of zippers and bags into a thing of the past. I’m here today to give you a cute,
FREE tutorial for making a zipper pouch in no time flat! We couldn’t get enough of the new Canvas At Home Collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics. It’s such a great quality fabric that will hold up after use making it the perfect pair for this tutorial. The finished pouch measures approximately 5″ X 9″. Let’s gather our materials and get started!
1/3 yard or two 10″ squares of fabric
We used At Home Canvas Fabric ( 55200-21CV & 55207-26CV)
Heat ‘n Bond Ultrahold
Chartreuse 24″ Handbag Zipper
Ruby Rotary Cutter
Click on the photos below to enlarge them.
Cut a 10″ square of an outer fabric, inner fabric and Heat ‘n Bond.
Fuse Heat ‘n Bond to the wrong side of both inner and outer fabrics.
Trim your zipper to about 12″.
Remove the zipper pull to separate the tracks.
Place each zipper piece right sides together with your outer fabric. Pay close attention to the direction of the zipper teeth (pointing inward) and wonderclip in place.
Stitch using a 1/4″ seam.
Fold the zipper under on either end and gently finger press. Topstitch 1/8” away from the zipper.
Trim excess zippers on both sides of your fabrics.
Time to get that zipper pull you removed previously.
Gently fold your pouch inside out and hold in place with wonderclips.
The hardest part of the pouch assembly is getting the zipper pull back on the tracks. You will need to take your time on this step. Feed your zipper pull upside down as seen in the photo above. TIP: feed one zipper track at a time until the pull catches.
Glide your zipper up the tracks to the middle of the pouch. With wonderclips in place, stitch a 1/4″ seam on each of the ends of the pouch. Don’t forget to backstitch.
Flip your pouch inside out carefully. Use a point turner to get the corners.
Your pouch is complete, now let’s move onto making our zipper pull!
Cut a 2.5″ x 8″ rectangle out of your inner fabric.
With wrong side up, fold each end inside about 1/2″ and press.
Fold the length of your pull and press to find your center.
Open it up and carefully press each edge in towards that center crease you just made.
Topstitch down the length of the folded fabric to secure the folds in place.
Using a wonderclip to hold in place, stitch across the end to hold your pull in place. Don’t forget to backstitch.
We hope you enjoyed this tutorial and we can’t wait to see how your pouch turns out. Be sure to use
