We’re back with another pattern in our Classic & Vintage series, the Nine Patch Star Quilt Block! In our Classic & Vintage series, we focus on traditional quilt blocks and add a modern twist! The nine patch, one of quilting’s oldest blocks, lends itself to so many variations due to its simplicity. Here, we’ve spruced it up with half square triangles to give it a new look.
The Nine Patch Star quilt block is available to use as a free download. You can use it in projects large and small, from quilts to table runners. Kimberly made her Nine Patch Star quilt using Sunnyside Up by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. The fun florals and sun-kissed colors really brighten up a room.
Quilty staffer, Denise, made the crib size of the quilt using A Day in Paris (fabric will be out in April 2019) for a modern look. Gina Tell of Thread Graffiti did the longarm quilting, and it turned out beautifully.
We hope you enjoy quilting your own Nine Patch Star Classic and Vintage quilt and please share your work using the #NinePatchStarQuilt hashtag. Happy Quilting!
Happy Friday Quilters! We are back with another pattern in our Classic & Vintage series, the Maple Leaf Quilt Block! It’s just sew perfect for Autumn! In our Classic & Vintage series, we focus on traditional quilt blocks and add a modern twist!
The Maple Leaf quilt block (a free download) is a gorgeous vintage block from the Kansas City Star columns that is simple, yet altogether makes a pretty-as-a-picture quilt! Kimberly made her Maple Leaf quilt using Farmhouse II by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda Fabrics. The warm pumpkin tones lend just the right autumnal attitude!
Happy Friday, quilters! A while back, we got a request from one of our YouTube subscribers for an easy gingham quilt. Yes, gingham quilts are made up of rows of straight squares, but could we make it even easier? We took on the challenge and did it! Today, we are presenting the 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt. Three hours is long enough for you to make this quilt from first cut to finished quilt top. Intrigued? Grab the free 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt pattern and press play below to see how we did it!
We used the Essentially Yours basics line from Moda Fabrics to create our 3-Hour Baby Gingham Quilt. This collection of mini dots, checks and strips has an awesome array of light and dark values that mix so well. The most important part of this quilt is choosing the right tones to make it monochromatic, like a true gingham fabric, so in the free pattern, we have listed six color combos from Essentially Yours to make red, blue, yellow, lime, aqua and gray versions.
This quilt is so quick to whip up as a baby shower gift, but I have a hankering to use it for picnics this season! We hope you enjoy this sweet, simple beauty (and especially how fast it comes together). And of course, share them with us on social media! Comment and let us know what you think, and if you have any other ideas for our next video project!
Are you feeling inspired? We can’t wait to see what you create with these fun Impressions templates and new patterns! To help you get started, we’re giving away a set of Aurifil Thread that corresponds with the quilt kits! Subscribe to our YouTube Channel to be entered to win! It’s time for another gorgeous quilt tutorial and our favorite – a free pattern! Today, we’re going to show you the Mini Charm Mocha free quilt pattern and a quick look at how to create this neutral, metallic piece! As the weather begins to turn, it’s the perfect time to make this quilt, and have a taste of mocha! (But beware, everyone might want this one for their own!)
We selected the Modern Background Luster Metallic collection by Zen Chic for Moda Fabrics. This line is so versatile and gender neutral! The flecks of metallic give such a playful and unique look to the line!
How fun is the stitching on this modern quilt? We love the square charms from the Mini Charm Pack off-set by the squares quilted on the diagonal!
Let’s get to quilting! We can’t wait to see your Mini Charm Mocha quilts! If you’re using a different collection for the free pattern, please share with #minicharmmocha! We love seeing your unique interpretations of our fun, free quilts! Happy quilting!

We hope you’ve been having fun with our weekly inspiration and giveaways. There are so many video gems in our FQS vault (also known as our YouTube Channel) that we’re sharing some more inspirational how-to’s based on a theme. This week? Applique! We’ve also got a fantastic giveaway, and two people will each win a prize package valued at over $80, which includes the thread-y goodness show below – yum!
We know, we know – some quilters consider applique the “A word”. Here at Fat Quarter Shop we think applique gets a bad rap, so we’ve gathered some FQS videos that will help you develop new applique skills or further develop those you may already have. Take a peek!
To enter: Leave a comment on this blog post sharing whether you currently use applique in your quilting and sewing, or if you have yet to take on this sewing technique. Giveaway ends on 9/26/16 at 8 AM CST. The two winners will be chosen at random and announced in an update on this post by 9/28/16, and will be emailed about their prizes.
